Is it normal to drink this amount? (uk only plz)

Ok, firstly, I want people from the UK mainly to answer this, simply because different cultures have different attitudes to alcohol and I want to know if this is normal in my society.

I am 21 years old, female, and I'd say I've been drinking heavily since I was about 15. I won't detail my drinking history as a teenager, cuz, you know, LONG, but basically Im at Uni now, every social activity seems to involve alcohol. I get drunk maybe twice a week. Typically on a night out Ill drink a bottle of wine before I go out, and then have a couple of doubles and shots in a club. On top of this, I'll go for a few beers once a week. I worry because I get INSANE hangovers where Im hungover all day. My drinking has improved but once I start I find it really difficult to stop. Sometimes when drinking at home with my boyfriend I'll drink about 2/3s of a bottle of vodka over the course of a night (from say, 8pm to 4am).

When I'm at uni I can regulate my drinking but when Im at home and theres free beer around I just end up drinking it out of boredom or something. I've been at home for 8 days right now and I've drunk 12 beers and 2 bottles of wine, split between drinking on 5 occasions. Do other british girls drink this much? Should I be worried? I'm worried...

I'm British, northern and I work with university students. They drink roughly what you do, perhaps a little more. After exams, significantly more.

As for hangovers, there are ways to minimise them. Hydrate before you go to bed. A couple of pints of water goes a long way, even though it's the last thing you'll feel like doing after a night on the lash. The next day, caffeine is a no-no as it's a diurectic and will prolong your dehydration. However, if you can face a couple of pints of fruit juice then the stimulant effect of caffeine outweighs the diuretic effect (as long as you follow it with the juice straight away).

An affogato (espresso over ice cream) is wonderful but a cola float (chunk of vanilla ice cream in a Coke) always did the trick for me, followed by lots of ice cold fizzy water.

I'm pretty sure being a drunk isn't location specific.

  • I'm 18 but I still drink Pepsi or lemonade a lot. I hate beer. I can't see why people like it so much, it tastes like a fizzy saliva to me.

By the way, I'm a Brit. Leeds!

Leeds Met Uni Student - I go to the gym everyday and eat really healthy during the week but come the weekend either friday or saturday without fail i will easily drink a 70 cl bottle of absolut to myself then go out with mates and drink plenty more beers and jager bombs. Needless to say i still wake up wasted the day after.

2 bottles of wine and 12 beers over 8 days doesn't really sound excessive to me. 2/3 of a bottle of vodka-depends on the size of the bottle but you are spreading it out over 8 hours.
Getting very drunk 2 nights a week sounds okay for a student!
If you are having to drink to excess every day, then you would have a problem but it doesn't sound like you are like that to me.
    UK here too!

Im a Canadian guy and i do the same thing so drinking that much is normal for me. Doctors say binge drinking is no good. I say FUCK THEM IM DRUNK!
Its only a problem when people you dont even know tell you to go to AA. If your family tells you to go, tell them to SHOVE IT and fight one of them.

Try and drink a glass of water with every alcoholic drink. That will definatly help out with the hangover.

Can you Brits tell me what "uni" is? I thought college was the correct term and "university" is the overarching name to identify the educational institute that runs the various colleges, grad schools in it.

We generally do "college" from 16-18 and university/polytechnic (more often university these days) is 18+. It's not incorrect because it's different to another country. It just is what it is. Another difference is that we don't really differentiate "grad school". Postgraduates often study at the same university they got their undergraduate degree. And finally, "faculty" is another contentious one. I'm led to believe that Americans/Canucks use faculty to describe a body of staff. We use it to describe a subject area. I'd describe the faculty I work for as medical but that means the subjects taught are medical as opposed to the "staff" being medical, even though they are. Subtle difference but an important one to consider when trying to attract American students who may not understand how another country defines things.

I'm not from the UK but have friends who are and they all drink pretty regularly (to get drunk) too. More than I've seen my Canadian folk drink. You seem pretty normal by thier standards.

That being said, alcoholism is alcoholism no matter where you're from. It would take you the same quantity of drinking to become and alcoholic whether you live in the UK or Canada. So just because it is more normal to drink their does not mean you are not an alcoholic. It sounds like you've still got it somewhat under control given that you can regulate it when at uni...but I would be very careful because it sounds like you are dangerously close to stepping over that line.
