Is it normal to do something stupid at work?

I know it is normal to do something stupid at work. But I can't believe what I did and I feel ridiculous. But I said something to a guy I work with at work and he said that it was fine even though he is new.

The Sous Chef that I work with had wrote out something on my menu to type up and I didn't know the term that he had written out and I guess he thought I knew what it ment when I didn't. But I typed the menu up and left it on there when I shouldn't of. I feel rather stupid now that I know what it means. :\ But I guess I'll just tell him he shouldn't had wrote it out like that. He should already know I'm a mess anyways. lol

But do you have any ridiculous stories that you have done at work before?

    SUPER EMBARRASSING

I worked a high paying job in an office dealing with large sums of money and mission critical computer systems. There were only 3 computers in the office.

I was at my desk and playing with a new lighter (the one with the super strong blowtorch flame) and was kind of in daydream mode... and I noticed a nail sticking out of the desk...

So I wanted to know if I heated the nail enough, would it turn red, and then perhaps white...

After 3 or 4 minutes I smelled smoke and then realized that the directional heat from the blowtorch had gone beyond the nail and MELTED my keyboard LITERALLY in half.

I detached the keyboard from the computer, attached a note saying that I had done it and would take full responsibility and put it into the CEO's draw for when he got in to work the next day.

I went home expecting to be fired the next day.

Instead he had me come in and explain what had occurred. Luckily he believed me and said he would deduct the cost of a new keyboard from my pay.

He never actually did. And it was never mentioned again.

    Crazy experience though right?!?

Its ok. Don't worry about it. We all goof up sometimes. I work in a kitchen as well. And to answer your question; Yes! I act ridiculous at work. I've done some pretty embarrassing things. And I don't know why, maybe because of nerves and that overwhelming feeling I get around a lot of people. But I act really weird there. And for some reason, it seems to only be there. And in front of customers, always!

At home and anywhere else, even at school, I'd act completely normal. At work, it sometimes seems as though my head isn't connected to my body. We're just always busy it seems. And we're short workers right now, so I feel like I'm doing the work of 3 other people. Its normal.

    • Yes, that's exactly how I feel. Thank goodness I have great help from people there at work though even though there is so much I have to get done.

That is soooo normal. My husband's a chef, and Dappled is right -- working in a kitchen is a tough job. What you did was quite mild.

My first day working at a jewelry store, I took an extra 50 percent off a customer's ring, costing the company about 200 bucks. Surprisingly, my boss teased me for a few weeks about it but didn't fire me. Still, it was a way more costly mistake than your leaving a word on a menu. :)

Oh, and another time, I closed a letter to a prospective client with "Warm Retards" instead of "Warm Regards." I'm a professional writer. As you can imagine, I did not land that writing gig.

Working in a kitchen is difficult and fraught with mistakes. It actually is a much more difficult job than people imagine. Don't beat yourself up about it. Just learn and move on.

  • Lol. A few years ago I processed payment to a vendor for a substantial amount of money ($7900). I had recently been chewed out by my supervisor over something completely minimal, so I was even less motivated then I am normally. I ended up getting a call from the vendor about them having received 2 checks for the same invoice. When I got around to checking it out it turned out they were right I had processed payment to them twice for almost $8K. If the vendor hadnt called they would have been $8K richer for no reason. It ended up never being discovered by my job and the vendor just gave us a future credit for it that was used up right away. But I always find that story funny.

Yeah I fucked up big time on a refrigeration shelf and wall I made for a trailer. It was of by a couple inches. I generally had a tolerance of 1/32 of an inch so a couple inches is HUGE.

I didn't get yelled at for it though. I think they just jerry rigged it together and maybe didn't realize I had screwed up so badly because they didn't have access to my blueprints. After that happened though they did tell me I was supposed to dry fit the crap before sending it off to the finishing floor. So it pissed someone off but I don't think they realized it was that big of a mistake on my part and I didn't get in trouble so it was all good. I mean, obviously I had screwed it up but I don't think they knew how badly.

There was some other stuff I did too but it was more like bad luck or inevitable.
