Is it normal to do something social, forget and repeat the behavior?

I sometimes talk to people in social situations and forget that I have talked to the person about that specificic subjest and I then at a later time go and talk to them about the exact same thing. I only noticed my behavior after having an inkling that it was happening and then being embarrassed because someone else noticed and laughed about it, thinking that I could not hear them. They said "that is the exact same thing she said the last time." the guy with her said "I know, shhhh...Don't say anything." in an effort to be polite. This has happened repeatedly but not incredibly frequently, although I wouldn't say it is rare. I always have an inkling that is happening but don't quite know until afterwards. I think "did I already do that?" Is this normal or do I have dementia. I am 50.

I do this all the time, though only my more straightforward and blunt friends / acquaintances call me on it. I usually do feel a bit ashamed and foolish, but I think ultimately it's not a big deal. At least you're not alone!

I asked one friend (a lover, even!) if she had heard of the band "After Forever" SO MANY TIMES without remembering I had asked before, it became an on-running joke between us. Plus any time I'm doing it and she catches me, she'll jokingly mention "After Forever" and I catch it. Sort of a subtle toe-stomp to get me to not make a fool of myself.

I do this constantly! I think I am simply fixating subconsciously on things that excite/interest me.

well I'm almost 49. you know you're old when you go into a room to do something important and poof the thought is gone...my blood pressure is also very low so the circulation isn't good and yes i get confused..it's normal we're getting old...the body breaks down.. I also have ADD so I write to do lists every day..

I don't think its dementia. It could be you have a very short term memory and forgot what you were talking about earlier.

Could be. My mum dose this and she's been diagnosed with dementia. She's 54. But i do this too. Maby not as frequently as my mum dose (wich is every couple minutes) but still... it happens. I know how you feel though when people point it out. It is kinda embarising.

Please don't say dementia. I do the same thing and I'm 18 :(

I'll get a bit of deja vu about what I'm saying and then wonder if I've spoken about the same exact thing to that person before, only to be confirmed every now and then when they mention it. If you're worried, then it might be worth talking about this with your doctor.
