Is it normal to dislike people who try too hard to be "different"

Especially the ones who pretend to be "dark". They're usually kids/teens but I've seen some older people too. They think having clothes/owning everything in black is cool and claim to be part of a subculture and like certain music even though they really don't.

But... but... I AM dark! My tortured soul suffocates the recesses of my skeletal heart! You don't understand me! You're not my REAL DAD! *runs off to bedroom*

I half agree, and half don't. On the one hand I agree it's really annoying when people act like they are special or above others for displaying a certain personality trait. It's very arrogant and elitist and exclusive, and breeds an "us versus them" mentality. But on the other, there's nothing wrong with exaggerating your "darkness" just like there's nothing wrong with exaggerating your optimism. There's nothing wrong with wanting to look "cool" and there's nothing wrong with defining "cool" in a different way to other people. There's nothing wrong with dressing in a certain way to fit into a community where you feel more comfortable than a community that doesn't encourage you to dress that way. There's nothing wrong with feel comfortable in a different skin to "normal".

They pretend to like certain music when they really don't? and you would know what they really like because you live inside their head? I dress in black because I like the colour and I recently dyed my hair black from red because I felt like it not because I'm trying to be dark, I listen to The cure because they are awesome and I wear heavy eye liner because I idolize Robert Smith... this is who I am I'm not trying to be different I just am different. I don't walk around wanting people to acknowledgment that I'm different it's people like you who label people like me as being "different".

To me It's not a phase it's what is authentically me, I'm not doing that to look cool or be bad and dark. You wouldn't understand.

I've got dreads, I'm like 6', 150lbs, I always wear a tank top, I wear rasta shorts or any shorts pertaining to Bob Marley, I always have long socks and Vans, I always get followed by the cops and always get stopped so they can check my bag, I'm a straight A student, I'm a WR on the football team, and the SF on the basketball team... can't judge a book by it's cover man, I just like when cops don't like me because I don't like them.

You shouldn't prejudge the worth of someone by their outward appearance. Judge a person by the content of their character.

I don't dislike them, I feel too sorry for them usually.. Unless they are very pushy about it, then it's just annoying & asking to be called out on it.

But how do you know that they don't really like it?

Haha I used to be like that. I'd find a band then when they became big i'd try to find something different and unheard of. I was a bit of a dick but thankfully I outgrew it

if you truely want to be an individual, just do what you like, who cares if everyone else likes it or not.

why bother trying to be something your not?

Different is better than normal. It's expressing who we are!

  • So what do they really like then?

    Logic rape.

Can you take every inch up your butt
Can you shit on my chest for good luck

      Can you quack
Can you quack like a duck when you suck
Can you fart on my balls when we fuck
Can you stick your whole tongue up my butt

I'm actually right there with you. Although I know people who are dark and its kind of just become who they are. There's this one girl I know who, lets say Machiavellian, and she's really annoying but I don't see very many people, much less girls, be as forward and weird as her. It's just who she is now though. But I will admit I do dislike people who try so hard to stand out. I get that they just want to be an individual, but it's like they a become a different person in the process. Another friend of mine changed in high school, but she's more confident now, so I'm glad for her.

I remember that watching Disney growing up, one of their classic motto's was "If you don't fit in, stand out." Which I kind of dislike, since it seems like you're only standing out in an effort to fit in. It's just a paradox of social norms.

I don't "try" to be different. This is just a part of who i am. I have always been a bit "odd" (Others labels, not mine)
I'm over 6 ft, girl and most would probably label me as "Goth" ( Even though i don't fancy labels myself)

To me it isn't a phase, damn long one if so since it has lasted from the age of 14-15 to my current 22 years. I do however listen to ALL KINDS of music and "secretly" enjoys music such as Britney spear, Rihana etc etc just for variation.
