Is it normal to dislike interracial couples for this reason?

Before I even begin, I just want to clarify that I am thrilled that much of the prejudice associated with interracial dating has subsided, and that people are free to date, marry, and have children with whomever they want. I also don't want to be called a hypocrite, because I am a white person who has a thing for Indian guys (the country).

The "dislike" of interracial couples has more to do with my personal preferences. I have always been attracted to things that are "abnormal" or "rare", and naturally blond or red hair falls into this category as these traits are USUALLY only found in Caucasians, and even then rarely among adults. To a lesser extent, blue and green eyes are also rare. And whenever I am feeling intellectual, I read magazines like Nat Geo and find statements like "eventually the world will be predominantly brown" and "the melting pot is truly melting now". And it makes me super sad...

Don't get me wrong, I don't entirely believe such futuristic predictions (it's like saying the U.S. will be 100% obese by the year 2050- no group of people will ever be 100% anything) but it made me realize, as cultures continue to meld, as racism hopefully continues to abate, and as the language barrier may be lessening due to more people learning "the big three" (English, Spanish, and Chinese), we may never again live in a world where there are whole pockets of blue-eyed gingers. And that would make me sad (this post may have been spurred by the revelation that the movie Weasley twins were not real red heads :O !)

        It is a sub-continent though, I think.

I have blue eyes and I'm only attracted to Indian women and I don't care if blue eyes will disappear. I find an Indian girl's brown eyes so yummy ;-)

I'll never date a non-white, so hopefully I'll be one of those passing my blue eyes on to the next generation.

i just read that whole thing and i said nothing about blackand white couples it only talked about how you like "rare" traits... you should have named it IIN that i like rare traits

    • I didn't mention I don't like black and white couples b/c that is not the case, it is only true when kids are involved; in ANY interracial couple (black and white, white and asian, asian and black) where the kids lose something unique from the parents I inwardly cringe b/c I love the little idiosyncrasies from certain people groups. This is mostly true when fair, blue-eyed people marry people w/ very "dominant" characteristics b/c those traits can be lost for good depending on who the kids choose to date for the third generation. The kids are almost always adorable and it is of course none of my business, I was just wondering if anyone besides me would find it sad if red hair really did become a lost trait, or if only I thought of such things. Apparently, it's just me, or people really do think I am racist.

        • That is not that uncommon among Caucasians, but both of your parents must have been heterozygous; that is only possible if the blue eye gene is common, which, it isn't in any non-Caucasian population. I was a bio major in college, but genetics was BY FAR my worst area and I am certainly no expert, but I do remember that traits which are both rare AND recessive can be lost over generations. The only reason they haven't been lost is b/c humans have distinct populations separated by politics and language. And the way I see it, if my scenario about interracial couples comes true, there are 3 outcomes

          1. Racism re-surges, and xenophobia becomes normal once again (not a fan of this option)
          2. People start to engineer babies so that "rarer" genetic combinations occur more often (don't even want to open that can of worms, but again, not a fan of fashioning people to fit the parents ideal)
          3. No one does anything and the world "becomes brown" to quote Nat Geo, with recessive traits surfacing rarely and some traits facing possible extinction

Of course I know I am being silly and I have no problem with actual people (I have two half Korean cousins) I was just wondering if anyone else knew/had thought about this situation. Guess not but then I always knew I was weird :(

            • sorry... I was not trying to make that response sound douchey... I really was one of the stupider people in my bio class. Heterozygous, isn't that high school bio? Maybe not. It just means you have different "alleles" (copies) of a gene. Since brown eyes are "dominant", a person with brown eyes can be "homozygous" (brown eye genes from both parents) or "heterozygous" (one brown, one blue). A blue eyed person must be homozygous for blue eyes. If two heterozygous people have kids, there is a 25% chance they will have a blue eyed kid (google Mendel's Punnet square). Thus, blue eyed gene is common, a fair amount of blue-eyed people even though the trait is recessive and "hides" sometimes for generations. It gets way more complicated very quickly, I just know that recessive traits need to be common, or they can go extinct quite easily through random chance. And worldwide, those traits are rare, but people don't often intermarry b/c of racism, language barriers, and religious differences. "Caucasians" are white people, and they are the only race where recessive traits are common, and even a fair amount of them have brown eyes. Interracial couples in America have always been higher than the global average (although still really low), and they are increasing in frequency, and in places like South Africa and Europe they are growing more common as well. I think this is awesome! The ONLY question I was trying to ask was, would anyone besides me be upset if we lost blue eyes, pale freckly skin, or red hair entirely? B/c while remote and many generations away, this is possible and smarter people than me have predicted it. That was all, but I was so used to being the dumb one in my class(this is not false modesty) I forgot that most of the world cares nothing for biology :)

But races can also die out. For example if it weren't for interracial couples, all Neanderthal traits would have been lost forever.

In case you haven't been following the research, current thinking is that modern humans, except Africans, have at least 3% neanderthal DNA. And that is for exactly the reason you'd think: our ancestors interbred with them.

It has sometimes been claimed that red hair is one of the traits that comes from this, which would have made my point much stronger, but this is apparently not true.

Still, it's only thanks to interracial couples that anything of neanderthal DNA has been kept alive, and some of it conceivably adds to the diversity of human appearance.

        • From what I understand... they died out BECAUSE of interbreeding, which proves my point, not yours. That's why I wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic, and it's kinda tangential to my point anyway. They were absorbed into the more numerous human population, and now despite containing their DNA, there are no Neanderthals and the idiosyncratic traits associated with them are not present like they used to be. I realize DNA doesn't just "disappear", but Neanderthals might as well have, which is exactly the point I was trying to make in modern times. Besides, this whole sidebar wasn't even my real question, my question was does anyone else think about this, and would the demise of say red hair bother anyone, and I already have my answer: I am weird.

Also vocoder there will be more unusual combos as races mix more . I only know one child with pale blond hair that has hair so nappy his mom keeps it in dreads , my daughter is blond with very dark brown eyes and so is her youngest ( it was almost impossible to find a doll that was blond with eyes as dark as hers when she was young )

    • I know this happens, and I love it :) Variety is cool! But in order for this to happen, recessive traits have to be common, which from a worldwide perspective, they aren't at all. I explain my logic to coolio75650932 below if you are interested. And I have blond hair and VERY brown eyes as well, so your daughter must be beautiful ;)

  • Yeah, I was probably being silly, I know personal preferences will probably keep these traits alive. I just happen to come from a family where VERY brown eyes from a Lebanese great-grandfather have been passed on through the generations. Both my great-grandfather, grandfather, and mother married people w/ blue eyes, and that trait has yet to be passed on. I love my eyes, they are very large and probably my best feature, but I have just noticed in my travels how truly rare these traits are, so particularly when I see an interracial couple where the chances of having a blue-eyed kid is practically nil, I always kind of sigh. But the kids are almost always gorgeous, so I really don't stress too much :)

  • You're a preservationist - that's a good thing. With that said, I think you need to get off the fence already and embrace it. Contrary to popular belief, there's nothing wrong with racialism - I mean, nature created distinct species for a reason; why shouldn't they stay that way?

I'm a person of European descent and I'm PROUD to say that I would simply never breed with a non-White person.

ANY type of non-Whites, or People of Color. Or - do you just have hostility and/or animosity towards people who have the DARKEST skin complexions of all?

          • As I've said before, I believe that Whites could be considered (generally) superior to other races according to certain criteria; according to other criteria, inferior.

I have animosity only toward those who make the conscious decision to do evil, regardless of their background.

How are Whites superior/inferior to other Groups of People? Also, as far as animosity goes, would you have anger towards anyone who happens to be a member of the Ku Klux Klan/Aryan Nations that is responsible for some major terrorist incident like you would be angry towards those terrorists in ISIS (Islamic State) and Al Qeada?
