Is it normal to cry when you sing?

Whenever I make up my own lyrics and sing, my eyes tear up. every. single. time.

this doesn't happen with existing songs, only ones i make up myself.

the songs aren't sad or anything, they don't depress me.

does this happen to anyone else??

  • This happens to me all the time! =D I'm also a songwriter. When I like the sound of my voice, and when the lyrics mean a lot to me I tear up. I'm pretty sure it's completely normal!

Yes I've done that many times in my life. I think it's actually a good release and sometimes when I need a good cry I'll make up a song and wham, tears a plenty.

The songs might not be sad, but your words obviously have a strong emotional meaning to you.

I’ve read that certain tones or pitches can vibrate the sinuses in a way that makes your eyes water.

Oh, my, God. I honestly thought I was the only person that did that and I was totally embarrassed to look it up... where have you been all my life people? I actually thought that I was very weird because of that.

Words you sing may be strong with emotion. Music is an art, and those artists tend to have actual meaning and passion behind their lyrics. It is a great thing to do, it extends your creativity, and can relieve you of stress, grief, and depression. It's also a great way to pass the time.

certain songs, emotional or not, will choke me up when i sing along to them. it makes me mad, because i just want to sing... but i just wanna cry. i too, think it's the melody more often than the lyrics.

PS for me it's usually the melody over the lyrics that will do it.
