Is it normal to cry everytime i talk about college?

Right now I am a senior in high school, and I currently take classes at a community college, but when my parents talk to me about applying for colleges and applying for lots of scholarships and grants, it makes me bawl my eyes out. I honestly would love if life ended right after high school so I don't have to go to college &be in debt for the rest of my life with college payments. But I have to go because my parents basically make me feel bad when I say how bad i don't wanna go &play the guilt trip about how they didn't go & "want better for me".
So is it basically normal to fear going to college?

  • Sounds mostly like you fear going into huge debt. You must be in the US where post secondary is so expensive. So that is pretty realistic.

Can you cut the costs by living at home & commuting, or working & going part time; or working a year or two & putting some money away, then going?

Debt is realistic & mature of you to think about - unlike a lot of students to whom tomorrow (payback time) never comes.

The other thing is that you may not be quite ready yet. That is OK. Look at working & saving. You will grow a lot emotionally over the next few years, be able to put some money away, and will have a better idea of what you actually want to do.

In the end it is your life, not about making your parents happy about something they didn't do.

Don't go unless you want to. I'm there and hate it.
