Is it normal to consider pets your family over and above human family?

Growing up, my parents were physically/verbally aggressive and I had little contact with my extended family. Friends came and went. Consequently I learned from a young age to seek comfort and friendship in my pets. To this day I often feel that my pets are more family to me than any human has ever been. Is this even remotely normal?

Considering that pets are also family, yes, it is. And in every family, there's going to be loved ones who you're closer and more distant to.

Yes. Pets are so loyal and understanding. They would make better humans than some humans do.

Most definitely, and they are so lucky to have you to love and take care of them. I also have closed off all contact with my family but I sure do love coming home to my pet babies. I have a hard time with trust issues now with people but all you will ever get from your pets is love and just plain happiness. They give me purpose in my life and I know they depend on my for everything. It is a huge responsibility especially with several animals but they are so worth it.
