Is it normal to connect with smell to this degree?
[Note: There are several lists. This is why it looks long.]
If I could order the five major senses from most frequently used to least, it would be as follows:
Sight is essential in the modern world.
Hearing and Smell compete for second.
Touch is fourth.
Taste is yet a sense that diverts my attempts to eat healthfully.
The sense of smell is highly important to me. In addition to the uses commonly mentioned by others, I use it to:
1. Find my way when I'm lost and without other resources. When I've wandered off, I'll track people I've sampled and rejoin.
2. Discern the ingredients of certain foods, such as one of those homemade "mystery" sauces people bring to gatherings.
3. Tell how long someone's been gone from a room.
4. Check my health (from urine. It may sound repulsive, but I know the difference between mine and those living here, and could tell who "used it" last).
5. Check the weather. I'll usually pick up signs of rain about 2 or 3 days prior.
6. Keep my other senses sharp. I have trouble hearing people after I take my glasses off, and I'm just oblivious when sinuses stuff me up.
7. Enjoy a visual display. Although I know people can smell with their memories, no one mentions smelling with sight. I think that all smells have color, and it's nice to just watch scents sometimes.
I would love to know if any of these reasons apply to you. No one has brought it up in conversation, so I've become curious: Is it normal to use smell this much or for these reasons?
