Is it normal to completely change after many years of drug abuse?

I always thought I'd do something special, but I never thought it was possible. I've put myself through everything (i.e. fine pot, LSD, mushrooms, MDMA, opium/opiates (btw prescription opiates) and even cocaine/crack) and have been able to successfully stop everything, except for my prescriptions. However, I, by some miracle, have been able to go back to school and get a degree in Mechanical Engineering; might I add, I thoroughly excel at my endeavors (3.6/4.0 GPA). Also, I've done this while working, married and raising two children. I've never shared this, but if anyone can relate....let me know!?

Not normal but I have seen it once or twice. I know a massive druggie that is now a clean, successful business owner.

    • Lots are, they can afford the drugs you see.

Though this person is probably a shit talker.

No, this guy is actually really cool. How do you get "shit talker" from this?

        • From the general vibe of the facts given. It's a bit overkill.

I still totally don't see how you got shit talker from it, is it safe to assume that you've dealt with shit-talkers that were once druggies?

It's probably safe to assume that this tommythecat guy is a douche bag. I’m not saying it’s true, but the chances are good, very good.

            • Yes i have, infact that covers most of my friends along with myself. But even more people who over exaggerate in order to make a lame story more interesting. A 3.6 grade average while married with two kids on that many different types of drugs...it screams bullshit, or at the very least over exaggeration. You can't function on all that stuff unless you barely take it...leading back to over exaggeration. It's like alot of people seem to post fake stories to get praise, that is "not normal"

I'm not saying it can't be true, but the chances of that are slim, very slim.

You just took a detour in growing up and finding your place, nothing bad about this..admirable if anything IMO. It seems you have had the best (and probably some of the worst) of both worlds in your life, in a scenario that is usually only applicable to the rock-stars among us mortal wage-slaves, college students and recreational drug users.

It is pretty clear now that ‘tommythecat’ is a miserable person. I will now no longer be apart of a dialogue where the only person responding must have really been hurt and is only commenting to make himself fell better about his own life. I was only trying to get some honest responses to the past nine years of my life and he has been the only person to comment.

I would just like to reiterate, that everything I shared has not been shared (other than with my close family) with anyone and has been the absolute truth.

Furthermore, I did this completely anonymously. Why would it make sense to create such a complete farce to share with complete strangers with which whom I would never, ever even meet?

I cannot even comprehend why some would create such a fake story...

If anyone else would like to comment, I'd be glad to share my story. But if it's only going to be such disbelief and skepticism...then I'm through.

    Regards,

So, there seems to be some confusion….

    Bullshit? Not hardly.

Let me explain. I totally stopped using the hard stuff a year before I started back to school. However, I did successfully completely everything I said only under the cloud of prescription medication and some occasional pot.

As for the GPA, it was my Major GPA. It accounts for my total GPA while enrolled as a Mechanical Engineer. You see, I went to college straight out of high school and that’s when I went down the wrong path. Therefore, the GPA in my original post is everything I accomplished upon straightening up.

    That’s the truth!

First off I have to say congratulations. :D Getting over addiction is quite an accomplishment.

Though I will say, I've been to my share of parties, and I'm a recreational user (generally less than once a month, and don't mix things really) mostly with acid and MDMA. Smoke weed pretty regularly.

There are people who can do all these things and still be okay. But to overcome a habit of abuse is a fantastic accomplishment. :D

This is abnormal. All of my peers who have tried drugs are more or less heavily addicted today. If you really did put yourself through such a large variety of drugs and managed to overcome dependence on said drugs, then you are a person of remarkable willpower and determination. Congratulation.
