Is it normal to choke up chunks of mucus every morning?

I'm 99% sure that I already know the answer to this one.

For the past year or so, my boyfriend has spent the first hour or so in the morning coughing up mucus and making really disgusting noises. I have been pressuring him to just go to a doctor, because there is no way that that is normal. He however disagrees with me. He's completely convinced that that is something that everyone goes through in the morning. Please help me convince him that that is DEFINITELY not normal.

It is allergies. I take meds which cuts down a lot. But not completely. I don't smoke - never have.

If there are white chunks, it could be he could have tonsilitis. It is dead white blood cells and food packed into little holes in his tonsils. When there is too much you cough them up. I had this problem until I had a tonsillectomy. It brings down the immune system, so yeah he needs to see a doctor soon.

He needs to see a ENT. This sounds very serious.

I had chronic sinusitis and I experienced this often. It was pretty gross. Got surgeries to have it taken care of, but the Pollen lately seems to make it an issue again. :/ It got reallllly bad when I used to stay at my bf's old apt. Apparently there was a bad leak in that building a few years before and mold was growing behind the walls. Gross, I know. But I literally was a sick, hacking mess whenever I stayed there.
Other possibilities.. Candida (google it), GERD, acid reflux (surprisingly different people experience different symptoms from this), or an untreated common cold / viral infection which can lead to allergic irritation of your respiratory organs, which in turn would make someone constantly cough up phlegm.
Sorry that was sort of a long response.. :] but Hope you guys figure it out!

It's common but not normal. It could be allergies, but if its nonstop then its not seasonal allergies. Smoking can cause it. A sinus or throat infection could also cause it. Basically, his body is REACTING to something, so he should see a doctor.

that's not normal, however I have known men that do this (most of which are smokers) and have nothing actually wrong with them.

That's definitely not normal and he should see a doctor before that becomes any more complicated then it already could be. Good God.

Is he a smoker? Does he have allergies or something? There could be a number of explanations, but no, that doesn't sound normal to me.

Nope. He is not a smoker and he doesn't have allergies. I just want him to go to a doctor, but he is way too big for me to be able to literally drag him to one.
