Is it normal to become temporarily mute under certain circumstances?

Good morning/afternoon/evening to the funky beans reading this,

I am cactus. You can call me cactus. I am currently a student in middle school.

I am rather incapable of talking to strangers face to face, no matter the situation. My fear of social events can range from being reluctant to express my opinions during a class discussion with students I am not familiar with; to breaking down inside of a restaurant because I simply cannot open my mouth to say the name of my order and always have the assistants wait for a few minutes.

At times I might become very agitated or go completely mad if other people continuously urge me to speak. Several teachers of mine had already expressed their concerns to my parents that I might have ASD. However, my parents don't believe so and neither do I, since I can communicate normally at home or with friends. I also don't have any trouble performing individual tasks and I am quite an academic student. But still, I would like to know about your opinion on this.

Furthermore, I have this problem which troubles me by a lot, which is that I cannot address anyone by their names (even if they are close). Having to say someone's name makes me feel anxious. I don't know if this is unhealthy or not.

Anyways, thank you for your time.

It sounds like you have social anxiety, maybe you should look into cognitive behavioural therapy for it.

Probably is ASD, having a break down in public is not normal beyond like 6 years old. Also basically the antithesis of social anxiety. You should get help with developing your social skills and emotional management while you’re still young.

I’m autistic and normally fully verbal, but I do occasionally go nonverbal or semi-verbal from being overwhelmed and it feels very similar to how you described it, intensely aggravating. It also feels like that when I’m having difficulty verbalizing how I’m feeling.

But you sound more like you have anxiety issued? Is it that you feel anxious?

That's called selective mutism and it can be a symptom of autism.

I developed a stutter for a while after my paternal grandmother died as a result of stress.

We are all temporarily mute while not speaking.

You sound like you've got a bit of anxiety which likely explains why you're mute.
