Is it normal to become more offended when people say "no offense, but"

People say this all the time, and it's always bothered me. It's pretty much like saying "i'm going to be rude. And i'm going to apologize for it before I say it, just so you know that I know i'm being rude, but i also don't want to offend you."

It's pointless. If you're going to insult someone, they WILL take offense to it regardless of wether you've said "no offense, but.." or not!

  • I agree with you. It basically means "I'm about to offend you, but please dont lash back out at me." Pffft. You should be like "No offense, but..." and then punch them in the face.

I use "I'm going to be honest"

An then I'm honest, it works better.

I'm going to be honest, your friend is a hack.
I'm going to be honest, you're a terrible navigator.
I'm going to be honest, that's bad color on you.

YES!!!! I absolutely hate that! Whats the point in saying, "no offense" when they really are about to offend you? And when they say no offense, it's pretty much them dropping the warning that what they're about to say is probably gonna be hurtful.

Its like, "No offense, but you look really horrible right now!". Now, do you think those two words, that they made sure to say before they dropped the bomb, is gonna make what they have to say seem easier to take.

"They told me I look really horrible right now."

    "Did you tell them off?"

"No, because they said no offense before they told me."

    "Oo.. okay?"

    Exactly.

If you don't mean to be mean, just don't be mean. Don't be mean and preclude the mean with a statement telling everyone you're going to be mean but you really don't mean to be mean. Because you do mean to be mean. And not only that, you're telling everyone in advance just in case they were going to miss you meaning to be mean.

No no no no.... you have the wrong idea . If they say no offence and you still get offended then they were being rude period.... butt then if they say no offence and give you constructive critcisim then its different. Just like if i say no offence but dappled is a terrible name for a villian.. then its nothing... but if i say no offence your name is a gay ass homoirotic name ....(i guess) then yea...... so it is a BIG difference

But I'm a villain. All villains need a subtext. Perhaps mine is just homosexuality. You should be scared. Think of what I could do to you. :P

yes, and did you also notice when you're laughing at someone and they say "i'm serious!" it makes you want to laugh even harder

In my experience, statements that must be prefaced with "no offense, but" are probably better left unsaid.
