Is it normal to be used by a 'popular' person?

I was wondering, honestly, if any of you ever got used by a 'friend' who happened to be popular? It was strange, because it would happen very suddenly, almost, but I could tell when she was trying to be nice that she was lying or covering something up.

I don't know why she did this or even hung out with me. It was just strange..and made me feel really akward.

  • I wonder how people think of "them" as popular. Usually, when a group of people are popular, they're hated. It totally contradicts the popular thing.

haha exactly, I define the 'popular kids' as the people who THINK they're all that. In reality there is no real popularity because you might be hated by some groups but loved in another

Yes. I was used by this really popular girl back in the private school I went to. (And actually, I'm not 100% sure if she would say she was using me. But I remember her not bidding me the time of day before until this one special day when she did!) Strange part is, I think her first intention was to use me for the time being, but her plan kinda crumpled, and we ended up getting really close, and became the best of friends. I was shocked at the time that I was actually liked by her. I honestly thought she wouldn't like me. But we had sleepovers, trips together, we went shopping together, we became inseparable! We were best friends! We had inside jokes, we were completely comfortable in front of each other with any secret, and we were fine with belching in front of each other and all of that blah. We crushed on the same guys, went to the same parties(which were usually like pool parties), and our families even became somewhat tight.

And it was all really crazy and unexpected because it was kinda like, total opposites actually managing to scrape up a few common interests, or like two people from completely two different worlds who never would've imagined being over at each others houses eating popcorn on their living room couch while watching a movie together, to literally just that happening! I ended up being totally different from what she imagined, and she ended up being totally different from what I imagined.

How it started: We had a tiny class, and her group of friends who were, "the most popular girls" in the class and school, ended up slowly wasting away until there was really nobody of the popular group of girls left except her. And I don't mean they died, but their parents either had to move because of the careers they had, or the girls were just leaving the school b/c they couldn't afford it anymore. Stuff like that. Well, me and my group(Aha!It was like the 3 of us! haha!) was her last resort.(In the classroom.) So she approached us... kinda like a little lost puppy on a persons door step saying, "let me in". So we kinda just welcomed her. We all were kinda aware though that probably the only reason she decided to come to us at the time was b/c her friends were gone. But I think we all later realized that what was meant to be was meant to be, and we were meant to become the best of friends. I guarantee that if all that never happened(her friends leaving) we wouldv'e never talked at all. I wouldn't have had so many great times with her. She would've never found out about the real me, and I would've never found about the real her.

      Wow, that's a long one.
We, I guess I see what you're saying. I thought she was one of my closer friends for a few weeks or maybe even a few months, but then she ended up going back to her group and ignoring me almost entirely.

Yeah, sounds about right. Thats usually how it works, sadly. <BR>:(<BR><BR>It kinda sucks feeling like someones last choice. But in school that was always how the "popular" kids seemed to work. And its even more worse finding out that it was only because they "needed" something.

Popular people have to use at least one person every two years in order to maintain their title and keep their membership in the club. It's all explained in the official handbook. You can check it out online.

Yeah, it happens. Don't think it's confined to school, though. I got used by two ladies who were thirty years older than me in two separate incidents.

It wasn't so much the act of being used that upset me, it was that I didn't understand it was happening. It wouldn't happen now. I generally know full well what's going on in any situation. There are probably people who think they are using me, but they're doing nothing I'm not prepared to let them do. And I'm also watching them more closely than I would have been otherwise.

"Popular" people aren't worth the time of day unless they are a truly genuine person. You can tell if they are genuine because usually popular people get to be popular by being outgoing. Those who make you feel welcome and easy to talk to when they talk to you are the genuine ones. But, at least where I come from, they're not usually that way. With power comes responsibility, and those who are popular do not have the skills to use that power kindly or responsibly. This is because "popular" people are mostly adolescents.

In another school I went to, one dude used me for money. But he wasn't really "popular", he was just a drug addict.

People use people all the time, and it sucks!
