Is it normal to be upset when people don't laugh?

This happens to me both in real life and on the Internet. I tell a joke/make witty comments, and nobody around me laughs or even notices it. It makes me upset because I like to make people laugh and also because I think it's a waste of mental effort if nobody cares about it.

Of course. We all like to be liked and to think we are entertaining. But the internet is a global community and what makes people laugh can be cultural. Some humour doesn't travel. In my country, irony is part of the fabric of life. I think we're encouraged to take an ironic viewpoint even as children. It can be very strange to converse with people who have never been exposed to irony. Similarly with sarcasm. Subtlety is also highly valued here. We don't really go for the brash or big punchlines that some cultures do. We tend to be self-deprecating too, which some cultures don't understand as humour is intended to make people like you and how can they like you if you are pointing out your flaws? What you are actually doing though, is bonding with someone who has already identified an obvious flaw and showing you're happy to laugh at yourself.

I guess the upshot is that the more you understand your audience, the easier it is to find ways of making them laugh. All comedy is about truth but not all truth is universal. Find someone who does raise a lot of laughter and see if you can work out why. At the very least, you'll learn something about the human condition. And that's never a bad thing for helping us deal with life.

When I'm speaking to someone foreign, my accent automatically drops into an international version that's easier to understand. But, with humour, it's really difficult to analyse it while you're speaking and modify various components of it. It just doesn't work like that. The only bit I can consciously leave out is sarcasm.

Did you guys ever think to yourselves the reason why no one is laughing at your jokes is because....they suck? You're not funny. Period. Its funny how you think there's something wrong with the person if they don't laugh, but there's something wrong with your jokes, they just aren't funny. Don't get upset at the person, get upset at yourself for sucking so much.

Yeah happens to me sometimes. Do you know why some people don't laugh? Because THEY'RE MEATHEADS, aka, dumb, brainless etc.

Don't worry though- only the people that appreciate good humor and actually have a brain in their head, will laugh.

I hate it when people don't laugh at my witty comments and I'm sometimes forced to explain them... -.- Then they understand them and laugh. I don't do stupid "that's what she said"-comments, but my comments really are not that complicated either.
