Is it normal to be unable to lose the freshman 15?

I went to college this last fall and gained the freshman 15. I have dedicated my summer to losing this weight but i cant seem to get it done. I have been exercising everyday and running anywhere from 3 to 5 miles a day depending on the day of the week, but i just cant seem to lose any weight. i have been eating less and better. is it normal to struggle with losing the freshman 15?

It's all diet - eat less more often, keep away from "white death (white bread, pasta, potatoes, rice etc)", eat more dark colored veggies and lean protien - only eat a complex carb (whole grain bread etc.) with 2 meals (small portion). Keep away from refined sugar, alcohol, and high fat dairy.
    Good luck! You'll make it!
Just remember even an extra 200 cals per day can break your hard work!

Go for walks daily and do a hard workout every other day to give your muscles time to rest and grow.

in your freshman year of college many students gain around 15 pounds due to certain lifestyle changes. some of these changes are things like eating unhealthy cafeteria foods (or just unhealthy easy foods), increased partying and drinking, late night snacking when up late studying, decrease in the amount of exercise as compared to what you had in high school.

Exercising every day actually increases your appetite. Make sure you're eating more protein now that you're hungrier, not more carbohydrates. Also, don't eat anything after dinner/ 7 PM.

No it's not normal that you are having trouble losing weight when you are dieting and exercising. Too much cardio can actually make fat stubborn, so ease up and run at a lower intensity. Also remember that diet is much more important than exercise.

Ask a doctor maybe you have a thyroid problem, or maybe you could be lying :P

    • ha i am probably just not being patient enough and expecting results too soon. i can guarantee you that its not a thyroid problem since i am not overweight or anything, just bigger than i once was

Well, your diet is also an important factor. What's your typical meals in a day? And how many times do you eat a day? Try and cut back on red meat unless they're grass-fed organic beef.

You're athletic but you're not a trainer. Go see if you can sign up for a class at a gym to keep fit.

I had a trouble with the freshman 15 too. I started going to dance classes 2 days a week and soon they were gone. My instructor is a fitness guru (they usually are)

  • Never got it :) college sports is where it's at! Go to the gym regularly, drink LOTS of water and eat healthier, you should lose weight and even if you don't at least you'll be healthy.

I think it's normal though, losing weight is harder then gaining

    • i was actually going to play soccer for my school but it completely consumed my life so i quit after like 3 weeks of practices. i barely had time to study which was too bad because i really enjoyed it.
