Is it normal to be too self concious about hair?

So, I'm having thoughts about hair. It's literally been the same length for a year and a half. I use to straighten it twice a day during the summer and EVERY day for school the whole year. But during those times, I didn't use protection products, probably the reason it barely grows but when I did use things for another year I didn't see any significant growth, (an inch or so but not how hair usually grows) plus taking vitamins didn't seem to be helpful. Now I'm thinking of getting extensions, but I'm too self conscious about what family will say about me having fake hair, (because my hair use to be long, and natural and curly when I was 12-13). Anyway, is it normal I'm this self conscious??

Yes, it's normal 22
Not normal 2

  • Looks like I've stumbled upon the right post to give advice on! I happened to be an expert on screwing hair up, and repairing it too!

I have naturally wavy, kind of thick hair. When I was 13 I got a god awful cut that made it impossible for my hair to look nice without me washing, blowdrying and straightening it every single day. My hair was growing, but the ends were breaking off at about the same rate it was growing, so I never noticed an increase in length. This is more than likely what's happening to you.

I also had the same length hair from age 14 till age 18. When I was about 19 I decided to not put my hair through hell everyday, learned to wash it every 3rd day or so, and the results are amazing. My hair went from being about shoulder length, to right down to the middle of my back, and I am impressed and pleased, and still only wash and use heat on my hair every 3rd day.

As for extensions, I've had them, twice. They are never, ever, as amazing as you think they are before you get them. The clip ins are the only kind that do not damage your natural hair.

  • Also, clip ins are never as cool as having your own hair. The clips are almost always visible, they're uncomfortable, they pull and tug at your own hair, they're just a nightmare.

Take my advice and just give your hair a break. Best way to let your hair grow and be healthy is to leave it alone.

    • Oh my gosh, your situation is just what mine is, Thanks, this does help a lot, but also, I'm experiencing hair falling out when brushing and washing, is it because I wash my hair every other day? I use leave in conditioner after every wash so I don't know what the problem is and I want to know if this is what happened for the next few months after you left your hair alone.?

Yes, it's very normal. I wouldn't recommend getting extensions. I heard they can pull out your hair.

    • And there's not a kind of extension that you can wear that still allows hair growth?
