Is it normal to be this messy/dirty?

I’m 22 and just started living on my own in a one bedroom apartment about a year ago. I go to college, which is like 12 hours of class a week(we also get a lot of homework). But even on holidays, when I have nothing to do, I still somehow manage to avoid cleaning things. I’m just going to be brutally honest and go through some of the messy and dirty aspects of my apartment:

• The worst and most embarrassing thing of all: I have fruit flies all over, that im finding almost impossible to get rid of! The reasons I have them will become clear as you read more.
• Practically all my dishes are dirty and sitting on the counter and piled in the dishwasher and sink. To be fair, I do rinse them a little and fill the glasses with water when I am finished using them.
• About a quarter of my bed and also couch has used plates, tissues, wrappers, dirty socks, snacks and other random items piled on it.
• I have on average 1 or 2 filled trash bags always sitting by the front door ready to be taken out.
• I keep doggy bags of s**t and used puppy pads in a trash bag on my balcony.
• There are ink and urine stains on the carpet because of the dog chewing my pens and urinating while im at school.
• Ive never cleaned my bathtub. Sinks are mostly dirty and slightly clogged. Toilet is dirty.
• My desk and most table spaces are unusable because of stuff piled on them.
• I have a pile of empty dvd cases and loose discs on top of my dvd player.
• I have a leak and mildew is forming on the walls near where it is, but the ironic thing is I cant have anyone come over and fix it because I am way too embarrassed of my messy house.

Is this in any way normal? I keep telling myself its ok because im young and don’t know how to manage my time yet but then again sometimes I get very philosophical about it all and start to think that this messiness is a reflection on my life and how im failing and unmotivated. I guess I just want someone to say that it doesn’t make me a bad person and doesn’t really mean anything if I’m this dirty?

Anyways, in the comments you can also talk about whether or not you’re messy and what strategies you use to clean your house. Do you have a chore list etc? How do you manage your time when you have school or work plus chores?

Do not be upset by nasty comments made thus far. I know exactly what you're going through. Some of us are just not natural cleaners and have a high tollerance level for messyness.
This doesn't mean you're lazy or a bad person, it just means that you have more important things to do with your time.
However there are health risks involved - mold poisoning etc.
For many years I was living in the same conditions as yourself untill I got tired of people not wanting to come over for a visit.
Here's what I did: I saved up for three months, then hired a cleaning company to give the whole apartment a springclean and they got rid of all the mess and grossness. After seeing a definite improvement in my stresslevels and moods after the cleaning, I have tried to maintain as much as I can, but I still need them to come in once a month as I am still just as messy as before and when they come in they just bring me back to solid ground again.
The other thing you can try is to act like you are in somebody else's house when it comes to cleaning. Think about it this way : If your puppy made a mess in someone else's home would you just leave it there? No you would probably (i hope) clean it up immediately. You can apply this type of thinking to anything you do in the house that has to do with cleaning.

    Good luck to you!!

You have MORE than enough time to clean. I know quite a few people who let their housekeeping go for quite a while, but it sounds like you have never cleaned? People still love them, but they judge them too and talk about it. One thing that makes me clean is i believe uncleanliness attracts negativity and causes irritation, depression, anxiety etc.

If you spent as much time cleaning as you took to write that post and read these comments, your house might be in a better state.

A few minutes per day is all it takes to keep your house clean.
Letting it get as bad as you have will ultimately just lead to you spending one or more whole days at a time to clean everything up again.

I've lived by myself but I always found time to clean. I'd go to work and school and then come home and straighten up before eating and homework. Then on the weekend I do laundry, vacuum, mop, etc. It doesn't take much time if you keep it up. I guess my motivation is that I like to take pride in what is mine.

That is fucking disgusting! Clean up your damn apartment!
What if a hot girl wants to come in? What do you do? If you invite her in a pig pen, she will run away...
    Seriously, clean up your room.

You're just fucking lazy. There's nothing philosophical about that.

Get up and clean your house. It's much easier to keep your place clean when you clean up right after you've dirtied something. It's called maintenance.

Your description of your house makes me feel a hell of a lot better about my place. I`m not very good at houswork.

Try to throw out useless materials just after their consumption:.-is a perfect solution for that.

Now, I'm guessing you don't have the time to clean up after yourself every minute of the day and I understand that but it looks as if you have no motivation what so ever.

Try getting out for the day and telling yourself that you are going to clean up. Make it your objective for the day. Go out and buy cleaning products and just progress by cleaning throughout the day. Maybe put some music on whilst doing it, I know that helps me.

In conclusion, get the motivation to do something otherwise it will affect you and your attitude in the future. Good luck.

I don't believe you're a bad person. I agree with Runswithscissors' comment. But I think maybe you should set aside a few hours a week for cleaning up a few things. The kitchen and bathroom specifically. And that includes everything that belongs in those places. Like your plates going back to the kitchen.

Once your kitchen and bathroom are clean, you could focus on your living room, bedroom, etc. Remember, you wouldn't want to put your health at risk.

Maybe a good friend or family member would even stop by to help if you asked. If you really want to have friends over, it'll be worth cleaning up. ☻

Stop asking about it and just tidy it you'll be surprised how you don't want it to go back to the way it was.... How can you not manage your time? You've got plenty of it.... Even if you just tidied like 2/3 a week you'd still have time to do all your work!!

  • It's not normal but I know a lot of similar people. I do not understand why anyone would want to live like that. It's not good to be that dirty, it's bad for your health and mind state. It does show that you are lazy at least with your cleaning. Honestly I hate going to anyone's house that's like that and will avoid going inside.

The way I keep things clean is I don't let it build up at all. When I have something to clean/throw away or I fuck something up, I deal with it then. For example I will get up and throw away my bottle soon as I'm done drinking it, or if I spill something I clean it up then. Don't let things pile up and stop fucking around.

    Hahaha that sounds horribly disgusting.
I am a bit of a clean freak you could say and for me this isn't normal but I lived with a girl who wouldn't clean jack shit! So I voted normal, which I am now regretting because I know that it's not.
    I'm being confusing.
    I clean everyday, all day.
    So no not normal.
    Even though I voted normal.
    Damn it.
