Is it normal to be the musical black sheep?

Ok well I'm a music person and I love music like smashing pumpkins, nine inch nails, and silversun pickups but the rest of my family listen to Christian music. Whenever I try to play my music outloud they always say something like "turn it off" or "how can u listen to that". It annoys the he'll out of me!!! I never say anything about their music.
So is this normal?

Well if they do that when riding in your car..then tell them music is drivers choice.

If you are blasting it in your room, you have respect their space too and bring it down to a reasonable level.

If they are just saying it randomly that you have a poor choice in music, could just say "same to you".

Get some earphones so they can't hear it and if they play their Christian music to loud, ask them to turn it down. Everyone likes different music, just because your related doesn't make it strange

I'm sure no one in all of existances listens to NIN or Smashing Pumpkins except for you. Seriously, I bet you're totally, 100& unique in your tastes........

Maybe if they listen to Christian, your musics lyrics are offending them. If this is the case, you are in their home whether you like it or not. Get earphones. (you'll understand when you're a parent.)

Don't ever feel bad about the music you love. Music is art and the beauty of it is in the eye of the beholder. Invest in a bad ass headphone set, lock your door, put on some black lights and enjoy what makes you happy.

Luckily, I come from a very musical family. While we all prefer different genres we can usually agree on what's good and what's not, so I can't tell whether you liking different music from your family is all that odd or not. I can definitely vouch for your taste in music, though. SSPU, Billy Corgan, and Trent Reznor are, in my opinion, some of the most brilliant musicians ever. (Especially the album Ghosts, I haven't met one person that has something bad to say about ghosts)

On the other hand, I was recently in a car with someone who would constantly listen to this K-Love type stuff constantly. I didn't want to say anything for fear of being rude, but it made me want to wring someone's neck it was just so annoying. I had to hold back the remarks about how I wish they'd learn more than 3 chords, or how the last 4 songs sounded almost exactly the same, or about how bad music supposedly inspired by Jesus could turn out so terrible... Except for Gospel. Gospel friggin' rules.

    /Opinionated rant

Sorry about all that... Anyway. Don't let your family discourage you from listening to great music. As for a suggestion; get headphones, it's win-win.
