Is it normal to be suspended over a fur suit?

Hi there

So lets start out with my schools dress code. it states "all clothing must be free from obsceneties such as references to drugs, alcohol, sex, and discrimination". Pretty standard dress code.

I have a fur suit that does does not contain any reference to drugs sex beer or discrimination. All it is is purple fur. i was not wearing the gloves or helmet as that is against school policy. so my hands and head were clear.

but that didn't matter apparently, because during first period, mrs. perch told me to go to the office and was freaking out because of my clothes. she even said that my suit "wasn't normal" which totally goes against my freedom to expression.

so I'm sitting in the office and everyone keeps looking at me and making me feel awkward. finally the secretary told me to go see the principal and gives me this forboding look like I'm about to see jesus and account for my sins.

My welbourne tried to be friendly but i could tell he was disgusted. he told me that "we can't have furrys running around in our school" and I'm like wtf. he gave a weeks suspension and said i better come back dressed for school not "hoolaginism" and that it might impede my graduation this year.

is he allowed to do that? I felt like he vialated my fitst amendment rights here.

    • Exactly. Hell, on spirit week we dress like romans, cowboys, and all sorts of stuff that is distracting but i can't wear a semi subtle fur suit?

  • I have the right to wear my suit and show my pride. pro homosexuality people can wear bright rainbow shirts. the school sluts can wear jeans so tight it looks like theyre not getting blood flow. the jocks can wear their sports uniforms. why am i being denied my right?

Yeah, I objected at first. i thought the system was being callous towards me? One of the classifications to hate crime is sexual orientation and i believe the furrydom is an orientation. considering the large number of our group.

my suit was not flashy. it was not big. I don't see how it was a distraction.

They should've let you off with a warning first and offered a change of clothes at least.

On a side note, being in school territory means that rights you'd normally have are automatically restricted.

I've always been told that once you're inside, certain rights/laws no longer apply to you - so heads up on that.

    • I still have a freedom of expression. there was a court case in the seventies about the same thing. kids were wearing peace wrist bands to oppose the vietnam war and they were suspended too. they took it to court and the judge ruled in their favor. I don't see why this would be different.

Freedom of expression does not give you freedom from consequences. What exactly where you trying to express with that outfit?

The outfit is a disruption to the learning environment, that was why you were suspended. I think one week was a little harsh. Usually when kids wore inappropriate stuff to school they were made to wear their gym uniform for the day or just sent home for the day.

Makes me wonder what kind of record you have.

I don't see how a partial fursuit is a disruption to the learning environment at all.

I feel like you aren't telling use the whole story, so whatever you're hiding probably makes the suspension normal.

    • I typed everything that happened. i went to school like normal. the only difference being my clothes. but my english teacher is very old and religious. she didn't say it but it was obvious she thought i was being sinful or whatever.

I'm pretty mature for my age and i didn't act out like most kids would.

When I clicked on this I pictured someone hanging suspended over a fur suit.

Freedom of expression really has to do with your dealings with the **government**. For example, you can't be put to jail for saying you think your government sucks, as can happen in other countries.

Schools and other organizations are free to impose their own rules, as long as they don't violate other laws (for example, exclusion on race/gender).

As another commenter said, you're likely not telling the full story of how the incident went about. You likely were a brat about it, to get a whole week suspension. And yes, a fur suit would be a major distraction to the teaching process, which is the purpose of the school.

The peace signs in protest of a major war is nothing to compared to a fury wanting some "freedom of expression." Suck it up, and wear your suit elsewhere.
