Is it normal to be so lonely in musical taste?

I've never had a good friend with whom I can share music I like with. My favorite group is The Residents, which I will admit is pretty off-the-wall but not completely strange. If I cannot discuss The Residents, I try something more "normal" (normal being defined as acceptable by standards of most people) like American Football, Patterns or Grimes. But still no takers. I will resort to the most normal that I listen to, the Grateful Dead... and nothing! Not even my boyfriend understands my music taste.

How will I ever discuss my favorite "weird" music like Koenjihyakkei, Throbbing Gristle, or Whitehouse when I can't discuss even basic things? Am I alone?

There are billions of people on this one planet. Lots of them will share your tastes. There are ways you can find them. I'd encourage your efforts in that.

What is unlikely, though, is that you'll transform the people you already know into being people who like exactly the same things you do.

    • Exactly, I don't plan to change anyone. I'd just like to find people with similar interests. I share a lot of music with my friends to see if they like it and they do the same to me. There is no force.

      And I will certainly look!

I like how the Residents are eyeballs with top hats. They deserve credit just for breaking out of their giant skulls and making it on their own in style.

There's no accounting for taste. And I don't think you should be too surprised that not many people are into or aware of that stuff. So don't worry, unless you think it will help affect your enigmatic, underground image - you poor misunderstood creature!! :P

I'd listen to ''Throbbing Gristle'' solely based on the name alone...

I listen to some pretty obscure things but I've always liked how sacred they are to me and how virtually unknown (or forgotten) they are. It feels more personalized that way.

I'm sure in these days of social media you can find people out there with similar interests, be it on a facebook page, forum or dedicated website.

I'm the same, my favourite bands are: The Incredible Lamp Shades, 3:00pm to die and Nuclear Explosion 5000. I don't know anyone who likes em.

  • I just looked up Koenjihyakkei and it's badass. I'll check out those other ones too. I love weird music. Most the stuff on the radio is not very good.

My mom used to call the stuff I used to listen to years ago (Tori Amos, Sugar Cubes, Björk, Cocteau Twins, ect) Phoebe music. i.e. Friends' Phoebe. She also did a hilarious impression of it.

Dude I fucking love the residents! I'm listening to Mark of the mole right now.

I'm also a throbbing gristle fan, and coil (which was two of the guys from gristle)

And Psychic Tv, shit anything throbbing gristle related is sick.

I've never heard of The Residents, but I really like American Football. I'll give a listen to some of the stuff you've listed later, if I remember.

Discounting people at shows, it's very rare for me to meet anyone who is into a lot of my favourite bands. I don't feel a need to share the music I love though, because music isn't a social thing for me aside from live shows.
