Is it normal to be short of breath several days after working out?

I don't usually work out, but I decided to use a cross trainer for about 30 minutes several days ago. The next day I found myself regularly having to yawn to take in air, until today.

I didn't exercise since then, and I'm worried about my breathing problem. If you have any technique to help me please share it!

That happened to me when I was much younger. I went to the doctors and they checked my lungs. They then concluded that I MIGHT have exercise induced asthma, gave me an inhaler, and sent me home. The inhaler never worked and my chest was still tight and my breathing still short.

I started working out regularly earlier this year and after a few days taking it easy on the treadmill, I was never short of breath.

Now, I was never out of shape, my body just wasn't adapted to the consistent running and lifting.

But every once in awhile I do have issues taking in deep breaths where I yawn and take very short breaths as a result. Not sure what it is though. I view it as sort of a panic attack and try to just focus and breathe slowly until it passes which sometimes takes hours.

its also possible that your shortness of breath is not related to your working out at all.

it could be anything from an allergy to a panic attack to asthma, or it could be something else.

Its a good sign that you are not short of breath any longer. But i would follow the suggestions of others to see a doctor.

  • What Solophonic said. It sounds heart related. Go see a doctor.

I would be careful if you have trouble breathing after working out. I know someone who started feeling fatigued and short of breath during and after working out, and it turned out he has a weak heart which can be dangerous.

It could also just be your body reacting to the first workout in a while. Just go by feel, don't push yourself and if it keeps up or gets worse after a few more times I'd see a doctor.
