Is it normal to be scared of my daddy issues?

I'll keep it short: I am a 19 year old girl with daddy issues and terribly afraid that some day I'll start dating older men. That scares me. I have kept longing for a father figure since a young age, but my dad died in combat. I only remember him vaguely.
I already am in therapy but that doesn't fill the emptiness, that my father's death has left behind and don't tell me to date older men, pls. Be real and give me some proper advice pls. Thank you.

  • I'll just say that there is nothing wrong with dating older men. Such was actually the norm for most of human history.

  • I am so sorry for your loss i cant imagine how you must feel right now but i don't think you should date someone that you want to look at as a father figure. If you date someone who you see as a father figure then your 'sexual' relationship will feel strange.
You should have someone as a close friend who you can trust with your life, is a shoulder to cry on and will always be there for you and to help you out if you want to look at him as a father figure because i think someone you are 'dating' is different to someone you see as a father figure.
Good Luck with your decision xx

It's always good to have a father figure in your life even if they aren't your biological dad. It doesn't mean you have to be dating them. (it's better if you don't. ) but they should be a trusted older friend who sees this void and doesn't mind being an older role model for you, or the stable one who's gonna tell you it's ok.. Just don't date them or lead them on.

I wouldn't say that you need to date an older man. Besides, dating an older man just because you want him to be a father figure would be like dating your own dad which would be creepy. But, anyways, it seems that you just need a man in your life, a partner perhaps, that can give you love, guidance, and protection. He does not need to be older or seen as a father figure, it just seems that you need something solid in your life.

First of all your father neglecting you all your life is considered daddy issues. Not your father dying and leaving you sad. Personally i think you just want to call someone daddy if you know what i mean

    • Yes, I get what you mean, but having my father putting the military over me, his daughter, being away when I actually needed him and then he dies somehow sounds to me as daddy issues.

A constructive response is don't try to change what you want with therapy, just go along with what you want. If you're attracted to older men I'm sure you can find one who's equally attracted to you. It's wrong to assume any age-gap relationship has to have some kind of 'power imbalance' or whatever the over-analysts might say.

It's not wrong to date an older guy. Just make sure that u don't get a guy that's gonna take advantage of the face that you are so vulnerable to him just because he is older. As long as you recognize the danger and know you have the issue to begin with you can better guard against its possible consequences. Just find an older man or mature guy your own age that can treat you the way you need to be treated. Just be careful. Filling a void with someone or something always leaves a much wider hole in their/it's absence.

Yup, I do get the picture, but I do think I deserve a constructive response.
