Is it normal to be offended by the "f" word?

The "F" word seems to be an indispensable phrase in the teenage vocabulary, especially the teenage male vocabulary, but as an otherwise normal teenage male, I find myself feeling rather abnormal due to my sparse swearing habits.

That's an under-statement actually... I can't even remember the last time I swore aloud. Now, when I read the "F" word typed, I'm unaffected by it completely. But whenever I hear the word spoken, especially in an intense or angry way, I shudder and cringe.

It upsets me, and I can't seem to turn that reaction off. It's just that swearing isn't normal in my family. Swearing, to us, means trouble and seriousness. I know some people grow up in families where the "F" word is every second word spoken. I just wish people around me would stop saying it.

I'm not a wuss by any stretch of the imagination, but hearing such a profane word used in a casual way offends me ever so slightly. So, am I normal? Are any of you offended by hearing the "F" word?

Used incorrectly, it signifies a lack of vocabulary and understanding of the English language. Notice that it is used more by the lower classes of society.

    Normal,

There is nothing wrong with manners, these can be very strong among some American folk.

In my delightful country, there are people who do this profusely for no apparent reason other than they want to be part of social cliques that no other person would find attractive. You may have heard of charvers, anti-social personality types. I, however, do swear quite a bit. This is because "I got issues", people do take offence sometimes.

I, am not offended by afore-not-mentioned-in-your-original-post word, though I do not say you must conform to my standards of indecency.

I'm not American, but I know what you're saying. And yes I have heard of chavs/charvers LOL. Whenever I see them in pictures, I'm reminded of what Americans looked like in the early nineties with track-suits and scrunchies and bling... it's like a blast from the past in modern day Britain.

Its a word. No one makes you feel anything you choose to let it upset you.

Actually, you're wrong about that. My reaction is instant, it's not a choice... it just happens. It's not negative enough to interfere with my life, but my life would be improved slightly if no one swore.

Your comment seems very defensive, and I don't think your read my entire post. I didn't accuse anybody of making me feel anything. I'm not angry with or blaming the people who don't understand my problem with swearing, I'm just asking if anyone else feels they way I do. I have no problem with people who swear out of habit and don't realize they might be hurting someone.

It used to, because like you I didn't grow up hearing it. But I guess I've gotten somewhat used to it. I still have a low impression of the intelligence of people who swear heavily though.

I'm pretty much used to hearing people say this alot so I dont always get super mad or anything. Whenever I hear people say stuff like this, I just assume they dont have a very good vocabulary. I mean, out of all the words they could have used, do they really have to cuss? no. i cant take people who constantly cuss seriously.

I don't mind it in conversation but not if it's used directly at me.

That's what it is meant to do.

    It's normal though.

I'm offended by the "F" term for gays. Fuck used to "offend" me as a child, but I've learned to embrace it in my later years. Everyone's going to be offended by one thing or another and you can't change the words "teenagers" say or anyone else for the matter.
