Is it normal to be offended at "ew, you're so pale, please get a tan!"

Hi! So I'm of Polish and Belarusian descent and I'm very pale. More of like a pinkish tone than a yellow one. And I've gotten comments like "Oh my god, you're so pale, pleeaaase come tanning with me" or "please get a tan, you're too pale!" Since when is being of light color a problem? Last time I checked, it is by no means okay to go up to a dark person and say "Oh my god, you're sooooo black, pleaaaaseeeee get your skin bleached."

I understand, yes, people's complexions are blanched when they are ill, but by no means should light skin tone be attributed to illness or a defect. is it normal to get offended by such a comment?

Um, YEAH. i dont think everyone enjoys skin cancer. And to be quite honest, pale can be sexy i think!! the only people who would say that are vain and shallow asshats. Pay it no mind :)

I don't get what's attractive about a tan. You burn your skin to make it orange and have a higher risk of cancer, congatulations.

You have every right to be offended. There would be hell to pay if a light-skinned person went up to a black person and said, "You're too dark."

It's hilarious for me because I'm actually half Moroccan (a country in Africa) from my father's side and he's pretty dark. But I'm pale/yellow complexion with dark hair and eyes. I bet I'm the whitest African American in the world, but I'm proud of it and I say screw whoever has a problem with your skin tone.

Don't get a tan. Everyone is getting tans now-a-days and it's unattractive and unnatural. Pale skin is sexy. Don't let anyone let you otherwise.

You know what i would say?

"Bitch, Please. Look at yourself, you're seriously asking me to be as FAKE as you, you're trying to be someone you're not. It truly is pitiful. You try to hide the fact that you're so ugly that you need makeup and all that fake crap to make yourself look good? What you don't realize is that when you do that - you make smigel look like Keira Knightley"

Tell them you don't want skin cancer.

If they have a problem with your skin tone the problem is them not you.

Lol this post reminds me of Snooki. I read her autobiography and she kept saying she hates pale people. Well even though I can't see you I'm sure there's nothing wrong with how you look. I'm tan in the summer, but any other time of the year I'm pale lol

What medical condition requires you to tan?

It's not required but they say that it helps for whatever reason. Necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum.

  • I'm quite pale aswell (Click my username to see a picture of how pale I am) and I haven't been told to get a tan before. I think the more pale someone is, the better.

It's totally normal. I'm the palest person in my family and they all say I need to get more sun and I tend to take offense to that D:

People tell me that all the time. A lot of people have come up to me and told me I look like a vampire. I'm pale and my teeth are quite pointy as well. I burn really easily, so I can't tan at all. I don't mind being pale anyway, but it does get annoying when people criticises about it.

People are jealous that's all. Some races from Africa, Asia, etc. dream of being lighter skinned and go to extremes to try to emulate Caucasions. To make up for it white people act like it is desirable to be darker. Even though they wouldn't trade it for the world and would never want to be black.

You are pretty just the way you are. Anyone who tells you otherwise since you dont have a tan deserves to be slapped across the face. I myself like pale women. So this would not be an issue for me personally as I find it pretty. They are probobly just jealousy they are not as pretty as you so ignore them.

Being fair complected is much more desirable than the tanning mom look or the unnatural orange look.

My buddy (who is a Phillipino dude) told me that women in his country take pills and creams to try to make their skin whiter. It's a status symbol in his country. He said he was really confused when he came to America and went to the beach and saw loads of white women tanning. He said it would be great if they could trade skin with his wife/other Phillipino friends so they would stop wasting money on the whitening crap.

And then he asked me later on why many white women look so much older at 30-40 than ethnic women.
I told him that it was because they likely did a lot of tanning when they were younger and for white people, it accelerates the aging process.

My Aunt is 45 and definitely looks her age. She's a ritualistic tanner and has been for many years.
My Mother, who posseses the same genes has never tanned and although she is pale as hell, she is 44 and is easily mistaken for a woman in her early-mid thirties. It makes white people age more quickly. It is unnatural and kills your skin cells.

Ask them how they feel about your skin in... say... 20-30 years. I'm sure they will have quite a different opinion.

I think pale skin is really attractive, personally. I'm Danish, so I know what it's like to be super pale...

Besides, the choice between "classic beauty fair skin" and "tanning-bed orange" is pretty clear to me. Fake tans are gross. Tanning lines are unattractive. People that let their skin do its natural thing in regards to tone are attractive.

Its funny how things come around. 100 years ago, if you had a tan, you would be "A poor laborer", and looked down upon by the well-to-do pale people. now the tan people are the ones with the nasty comments.
Im mostly pale, except for my arms and neck from working outside.

I think most people who actually go tanning are self-absorbed.

It's one thing for people to be like "dang girl, you're pale!" and point out your color, but for people to tell you to get a tan? Thats just freaking RUDE.
If I heard anything along the lines of "Please change the color of your skin I'm disgusted at looking at you!" There would be hell to pay.
Embrace your paleness. You'll be the last one laughing after they all die from skin cancer ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)
