Is it normal to be obssessed with wanting to join the military?

I live in the southern US. To many young men (and women) joining the military is not only a rite of passage but an absolute necessity for financial reasons. I always wanted to join the air force in high school, but my family convinced me to go to college. I graduated with a teaching degree, but I would still rather join up (NAVY now). Unfortunately, it would be something of a waste of my degree. I wonder i there are other young men and women in my shoes.

A degree is never wasted. The intelligence you gain is irreplaceable.

If you want to do it, I'd say just go and do it. I'm not sure how it works in the US, but in the UK the military wants people with good degrees, and you can progress quicker. Other employers also like people who have been in the military because it shows a sense of responsibility, so if you were to quit the military it should be possible to get a good job, especially with a degree as well.

Hope this helps, I'd say normal.

It would absolutely not be a waste to join military with a teachers degree. With an educator background you could be a great Sargent.

honestly as cool as military sounds I think if i ever joined ide hate it with a passion. The government doesn't give a shit about you and they will send u straight into enemy territory without thinking about your life. Of course, being in the military gives you status among society, even if it is quite easy to obtain (simply sign up and not mind taking shit every single day of your life)

I'm young but my degree was in teaching. I went to a navy recruiter but they pushed me toward enlisting, not officer, despite four years of college and a high asvab score (81). Does anyone know if recruiters get more for signing on enlistees as opposed to officers?

He's right^. degrees make officers. And there are plenty of instructing positions in the military across the forces. If you're young enough, you could get into pilot school. Just make sure that if you do join, realize that you could be ordered to give your life. Not very likely for AF/ Navy, or for officers, but it is always a definite possibility.

Actually joining with a degree is beneficial because you can now join as an officer. Officers have more power and make more...at least that's how it is in the air force. I'd say you should still join if that's what you really want. I wouldn't mind joining but it's not an option for me.
