Is it normal to be in debt?

Credit cards? School loans? Mortgage? Any kind of debt... Right now I'm 3500$ in which isn't too bad! My boyfriend has 13k... Are these numbers normal? Mine is all credit cards and his is credit cards and school loans.

    These days our government makes it seem okay to be in debt. Try not to be, pay it off immediately. It's terrible and you won't get anywhere with that hanging over your head.

    yours is ok if you dont spend any more. stop while your debt is still small. you dont want the burden of that hanging over your head for years, its not worth it

    It's normal to be in debt, but abnormal if you don't think far ahead about how you're actually going to clear it. It's because of this kind of mentality that we have the recent recession. Save before you spend!

    It's the American Way to be in debt!! i disagree with Johnny Bravo, it's normal for rich ppl too, i know for a fact. Oprah did a show on this...Americans in general like to spend more than what they make.
