Is it normal to be ignored by store greeters?

It seems like any store I go to where they have greeters they refuse to greet me when I walk in, but will greet others. I honestly can't think of why they would refuse to acknowledge me. I dress nice, hold my head up high, not ugly, good hygiene, and look them in the eyes yet get slighted the majority of the time. It irritates me. Greeters should greet every single person that walks through that door unless they are busy doing something else. Does this happen to you? Is it normal?

  • greeting is annoying if they cant tell you where something is in the store. no loss, plus their feet hurt (if that makes you feel better)

Why do you care enough to notice?

Because it happens 99.9% to me and I honestly don't have a good clue why.

You are not the only one it happens to my dear. I am a male and today there was a SAMSUNG display about their new phone by the Seaport here in New York City. They had a big display and were giving away free t shirts, etc... There were several young people working for SAMSUNG at this display, none of them approached me. Finally, when I approached one of the young ladies and asked how do I get a ticket to get one of the prizes, she hesitated, then snidely said ask the gentleman over there. I did, listened patiently through the sales presentation got my ticket and claimed my t shirt. I feel your pain.

I like when I'm ignored by greeters. You find them mostly at walmart and like to strike up awkward conversation sometimes. There's a particular greeter I know that I always make sure to avoid. lol

Do you honestly expect them to greet everyone that walks into the store?

If they clearly see you walking in then yes.

  • Aren't they there to make eye-contact with potential thieves, to let them know they are being watched?

^ a lot of businesses will provide these types of jobs for the elderly or handicapped. I think it's a wonderful thing. As for not being greeted...I never really notice if they don't say hello and usually greet them first. I would try not to stress over it. I'm sure they miss lots of people and it must get mundane doing the same thing over and over. Don't take it personally.

Not all greeters are elderly or wheelchair bound. Take stores like Dick's Sporting Goods, Best Buy, and Buffalo Wild Wings (tons of snobby girls work there) or any other restaurant where the majority of workers are sexy girls with stuck up attitudes. Like I mentioned to someone else, not earth shattering but employees should maintain a friendly attitude according to their job position that specifically deals with customers. Customer service jobs.

I do look younger for my age but I'm way older than a teenager. It isn't just old(er) greeters that act like snobs either. I've went into stores like Dick's Sporting Goods and Best Buy where the majority of workers are my age and younger and they ignore me too. The only two reasons I can think of is age discrimination or just another way of being an asshole.

That happens to me a lot also. It seems that most of the time they only greet me if I speak to them first. WTF, I'm not the greeter. It's not my job to talk to them first. I've heard that people rise professionally to their personal level of INCOMPETENCE and they stay there. So I figure that's the best that person can do is stand there and NOT do his job, and I ignore them. Going to Walmart is not a social outing for me, I'm just going to get something I need.

Greeting is a tough job....try standing in one location being forced to smile at people like you.....how disgusting that you feel so special... Thank goodness there are enough good people that can respect back.... I AM A GREETER....and I do smile and greet people like YOU....even tho you don't get paid fot it... Grow up!!!

Greeter job positions hold an immense place in the work force. Although many people do not realize it, the impact of the job is huge. This job can be utilized by people whose skills or physical abilities are very limited, and provides income or additional income to people who need it very much. It helps keep usually unemployable people employed. Walmart was the first company to make a people greeter an official job position accepted by OSHA and details worked out for the open labor market. Walmart is considered an innovator in the retail industry and labor market for insurance purposes solely because of this position. I could go on for hours, but, I tried to make it short.

As for the OP; the greeters are human beings and not robots. So like normal daily interactions, they may just not be noticing you or may be intimidated. Maybe you dont appear approachable, or maybe you are slipping by when other customers are near. If it really bothers you, try making eye contact and saying hello.

I feel it isn't my job to say the first word as it isn't my job. A greeter's job is to say hello or smile first.

Of course Aussie...but some people can't handle the other jobs or prefer this type of work. I'm glad they have the type of employment that makes them feel useful and needed. Plus it helps them earn a little money so that they don't have to be so dependent on outside sources.

I use to work a greeter/sales assistant, sorry if i didnt greet you. I was probably busy doing something else. (an advice) try and smile to the greeter.

You're forgiven as long as I really did notice you were doing something else instead of selectively choosing who to greet, lol. I'm not saying it's the end of the world not being greeted but when I walk in like any other customer it's nice to be treated with respect, especially if that's the type of job a greeter has. Companies should draw in customers by keeping a positive attitude. People though, we're such power pigs we do things on our terms to feel superior. Can't think of any other reason why.
