Is it normal to be hired to do nothing at work

last month i was hired as a full time secretary by a little company but i have nothing to do all day long!! i just answer to 5-6 phone calls and 2-3 emails every day. my boss is fine if i do nothing, the most important thing is to answer to that damn phone. it's frustrating and boring and i think it is a very strange situation.

I once worked as a night porter in a hotel, all I did was raid the bar and get drunk, then for some reason I got fired.

As long as you are making decent money, who cares? I will trade jobs with you.

Your boss should be able to find something useful for you to do, but since he isn't, maybe you could take classes and do homework at work.

I have a friend who used to have a job in which she did nothing. She'd spend all day on facebook and whatsapp. Recently, she managed to get herself transferred to a position where she really works. I never see her anymore. A job like that has its perks, enjoy them.

Ah, I know how that goes, I really do. Buuuut... if you accept it and start seeing it differently, you can enjoy. I used to work as a hostess at a fine dining restaurant and on Sundays, when it was closed to the public, I'd go in all by myself and just hang out, answer the few phone calls and take reservations. It was my favorite workday. I read a lot, caught up with friends, watched movies, listened to music... ;)

Um... In those days I would just walk around and lounge in a very beautiful and comfortable restaurant, so I suppose I can see how it can be bad, especially now that you mentioned the words chain and desk. Hehe

And that friend of mine was extremely unhappy before being transferred. Now I don't know cause she's too busy. Lol

I wasn't born in 96, that's just the number in my username.

No its not normal. Go read the Sherlock Holmes story "the five orange pips" and you'll find out why. It could be that they hired you as a front for a bank robbery while they tunnel behind your office walls into the safe of a bank.

*muscles is what I meant to say. I don't care for money that much unless it's a job that keeps me busy and energetic

I've always found that doing nothing was a lot more tiring than being busy at work. If you really can't take it, at least you have a job while you are searching for a new one. God luck.

If your boss invites you to meet him at a hotel or similar, don't go. Sounds like he is getting you ready' so that you can pay him back for you doing virtually nothing. Be careful!
