Is it normal to be genuinely hurt by "normal" racist comments?

I don't mean any of the aggressive or personal or overly offensive stuff. None of that "go back to where you came from" stuff. Just "normal" stuff based on racist stereotypes, or stuff that deliberately others you based on race. Like people saying "me love you long time" because you look Asian. Lately I can't even politely pretend to find it funny, I just get sad. Am I normal or am I overreacting way too much?

From what I can tell, if someone says "me love you long time," they're just quoting Full Metal Jacket and aren't seerious with what they're saying at all.

I tend to have it in the context of people who are sexually interested in me though :/

Well then, perhaps they mean what they say, just they decided to say it using a funny quote.

  • Don't pity yourself, it's non-productive and a waste of time. Pity them for their ignorance and just get on with life.

As an Asian, don't take everything so personally and you'll be a lot happier.

Any adult who thinks that saying “me love you long time” to an asian-looking person they barely know is witty needs to grow up. I wouldn’t even bother fake laughing.

Thinking it’s stupid is normal but being moved to tears isn’t.

"Me love you long time" is actually pretty offensive if you ask me. The best response to give someone is confusion, and literally say "I don't get it." If they have to explain themselves they might start to realize how not funny it actually is.

But then again sticks and stones...

I think so, but I want to be able to differentiate between "normal" sensitive and destructive sensitive

Unfortunately being overly sensitive is abundant these days, but I don't think it's a normal human condition.

If someone says "All your base are belong to us", chances are they are just a geek like me or a fan of zero wing.

Being an overly sensitive cupcake will just make you miserable. Lighten up!

Yeah, people can be shitty. Venerate cats as pagan gods instead!

Remember the old saying, 'sticks and stones will break your bones but names will never hurt you'.

Only humans are offended by words.

  • I always thought it was “me horny long time”. Anyways, you do seem pretty sensitive on the topic. When someone calls me a cracker I just say thank you.

I mean on one hand you have a case, but on the other hand, you need to toughen your emotional skin. No critisism that simple should get you that easily.
