Why? A heartbeat means that the bio-engine you have in your chest is working fine!
My dad had heart surgery (fairly recently) and (only) now I come to realise what a wonderful sound it is!

My daughter has a heart disease called shones complex and has had a couple of heart operations so far.
Just the idea that listening to a heart beat and then it suddenly stop, creeps me out. So I avoid hearing them so that it never happens. Haha sounds kinda silly but truth.

I know that feeling. Before my dad got the surgery and a new valve, I was afraid of that too. Sometimes when I woke up, I'd go to the bedroom to listen if he was allright. My mum is a heavy sleeper and I can hear her, but my dad - no. Sometimes I didn't hear anything. Not even breathing (Or that's what I thought). Now if I wake up and have to go for a drink or to the toilet, I hear them both and yeah... it's a nice sound! Be glad you hear it!

Sorry if my previous comment came as rude or anything...

Yeah thats scary when you dont hear anything, i can relate to that fear in a way. You're right though, It's a sign of life which is beautiful so I really should appreciate it, I just worry too much I suppose.

No worries! I didn't think it was rude at all =]

ok, lets get a little weird! the most likekly reason you like the sound of the heart beat is (dramatic pause!) because people were born listening to it inside their moms belly, this could also be because of the need of fatherly comfort but dont worry its nothing incestual. this has been (-crowd- mezimire's insanity!) so stay tuned and remember, youre never too insane to participate.

Recording of heartbeats have been used in music so, you could do this as long as you got consent to record the beating heart. For you, it might be a comforting mechanism.
