Is it normal to be disgusted by the mentally disabled?

I'm really not trying to be insulting. And this really bothers me, because generally I consider myself a very nice person, but I just can't stand mentally disabled people. I have this weird fascination with them and have to keep myself from staring...it's like I'm fascinated and disgusted at the same time. It's awful, I know, but they really bother me. I find myself not caring about their feelings, and even wondering how they could have feelings or coherent thoughts. I have to remind myself that they are people and that we treat them as equal to any other person. I'm deathly afraid of having a mentally disabled child, because I couldn't make myself raise them, let alone love them, and I'd be condemned for that. I'm so sorry if I offend someone, I'm honestly not trying to be insensitive, and really that's what distresses me the most - I don't want to be insensitive, at ALL, but I can't seem to help feeling this way.

I hope you are just trolling. They are the sweetest people in the world once you get to know them.

Nazis could be total sweet hearts too.

I'm not saying that this is not no Proof at all that you're correct but...

I think you need better reasoning than just "they're sweetie pies!", unfortunately.

I agree and I don't think they have the mental ability for feelings so it's doesn't really matter what to think of them, it's only their guardians who choose to take offense. There is a wide spectrum of mentally disabled, I have no problem with the higher functioning ones, but those who don't even seem to know they're alive or acknowledge their surroundings, don't need to be treated as if they do. that probably sounds horrible to most people but think about it. in nature they would not survive, we are just prolonging the suffering. it really is disgusting to me.

Well, look at it this way: being that your coherent now, would you want someone to be disgusted by you if you were to ever get into a debilitating accident, or say develop a degenerative brain disease later on in life. Shot in the dark, but you'd be helpless and die if everyone were disgusted of you.

Is it normal? Yes, being disgusted by certain things and people is ingrained in us by our surroundings.

We're all different. What we label as mental disablement is just another difference.

I used to work with the mentally disabled in high school in a volunteer program and outside of high school in volunteer programs and believe me, you're definitely not the only one who feels this way. I still see things that make me think "Oh lord, how has this person continued to live?".

There are a lot of sad stories within the special needs field. Shaken Baby Syndrome, abused children, children whose parents used drugs during pregnancy, children who were in accidents which resulted in brain injuries... and the results can be downright nasty. I completely understood, it took me two years for the shock value to off myself.
