Is it normal to be deathly afraid of driving a car?

I am completely terrified of driving a car.
I am 19 years old and I am just now learning how to drive.
I have never been in an accident and I am fine when someone else is driving.
Every time I get behind the wheel of a car I have a panic attack.
IIN? What should I do that will help calm me down behind the wheel?

Heres a tip for learning. 1. Have your dad/mom go with you when it is raining to an empty parking lot with no poles or other obstructions. Drive around on the wet pavement to get a feel for driving in the rain and get a feel for controlling the car in those conditions. Then you will need to pick up the pace a little and take lots of turns and try to get the car to break traction slightly. That is one of the worst feelings while driving; losing traction. Once you do that in this controlled environment you will learn what it feels like and know your reaction. The first time is always the scariest. So, get over that first time in this controlled, supervised environment. This is how I learned. 2. Have your dad/mom go with you. Drive up a hill. Drive on a one lane road. Drive down a hill. Drive by a lake. Put yourself in a bunch of different situations just cruising. Dont just stick to a two lane highway or your street. You need to be put in different situations with different variables. My dad took me to a gravel road to teach me how it feels to drive on unstable terrain. So i learned quickly drive slower on gravel and how easy you lose traction. He also took me up a one lane dirt road with a cliff on one side. He told me, both of our lives are in your hands so show me you can do it. You will learn better once you experience more variables. You will learn how different terrains and settings should affect your driving, and you will be a more confident and experienced driver once you get your license. To acquaint yourself with driving around other people and the unsurity of parking lots; drive to your downtown area or mall. The speed limits there are lower, and you have other cars passing you, trying to get around you, backing up, and people walking in front of you and between cars. This is also good experience. Good luck! Hope this helped.

Okay that comment by password pissed me off. You're 15, good for you. You're not even supposed to be on this site so STFU.

And yes, it's perfectly normal. I didn't actually get my license till 22 because of how petrified I was. I actually had nightmares. I recommend driving lessons with an instructor you click with. Driving schools have cars with extra brakes/gas pedals which always made me feel safer lol. I am more comfortable in my car now than I ever thought I would be. I drive in all conditions and all roads with no fear. You'll be fine, I promise. Just breathe. :)

i am 19 as well and just learning to drive, it was really scary at first but i got used to it by realising that u have almost complete control when u are the driver. also the other people are trying to avoid crashes too... i used to be so shakey when i first drive, that i couldnt even hold down the brakes with 1 foot... and my wrists would twitch, jerking the wheel... but now i know what to do and it's fun! it's more scary as the passenger...

Why do you really need to drive? It's one of the nastiest things you can do in terms of killing other people.

Only if you are a crap driver or if you go out of your way to kill others

Driving a car is one of the most exciting privileges anyone can do in their lifetime. If you're still scared, visit a go-kart track. That will help you get over your fear of a fender bender.

First time I touched a steering wheel I took off like ghost rider :)

I was scared to drive. Had lessons on and off from 18 to 26. I just took it slow and passed my test when I was 27 first time! I'd have never believed it myself. Now I'm ok, i will never love driving but it's so useful as I'm a single parent who also looks after my mum and nan who both dont drive. I now depend on a car for myself and others. It's the best thing I did. Confidence comes with practise and the best advice I can offer is not to rush...

i think you just need to believe in yourself and be more confident!~ Remember you have the skills.. oh well soon to have the skills.. and once you pass the exam it proves that you do have the skills to drive on the road!~ remember no dangerous actions! ^_^

if you are this scared about driving then i suggest you never get your license (if you can get one) because paranoid drivers such as yourself cause a lot of accidents and road rage. my sister is probably one of the worst drivers i know and she is scared like you and she has caused her fair share of accidents. i would never ever get in the car with her, ever. it scares me to know that people like her are on the road, now i will have to worry about you driving....please dont drive.

I'm 18 years old and the exact same way. I don't think it's not normal, but it's definitely annoying. The best thing to do is take it really slow. My parents and friends thought it was best to just start me right off on a populated road, but that increases the panic tenfold. Find an old parking lot and just drive in circles. Get used to turning and stopping. Worry about road and traffics laws and etiquette once you are more comfortable behind the wheel.

No offense but that's kinda pathetic. I' 15 and taking drivers ed courses now, and I'll admitt it can be avery scary thing, but as long as you know what you're doing then you should be just fine!
