Is it normal to be confused over suge?

When I first read the name Suge Knight on the credits of a rap album many, many years ago I thought it was pronounced 'sooooj' (rhymes with splooge) instead of 'shoog' and now every time I see the name I still read it as 'sooooj'. I hate the spelling of Suge and it doesn't make sense to me.

IIN?

I have always assumed it was short for sugar. But sug would be read like it rhymed with slug. So when it comes to fake words it is hard to spell them.

I felt that way when I saw the name "suga mama" on the proud family back in the day. I thought it was pronounced "soo-gah" but then I heard them say her name. Shuug.

Back then I used to say Sooj cuz it made more sense, until I found out it was shuug

    Who?

Oh well... It is odd that it would be pronounced like that because usually there's nothing in that word that would be making an "H" sound.
