Is it normal to be confused by extreme stupidity?

I was speaking to my brother today, and I got into a fight with him. I was telling him that he was ruining my day, and he was being very stupid. heres the thing, though. my brother likes to act like hes smart. hes acting very egotistical, and he s acting like hes above me. Its really annoying. he was also saying some really dumb stuff while acting smart. He said it with such a scholar-type face on that it was hard not to laugh at him. most of what he said relly confused me though. Maybe his stupidity was so advanced that my average-intelligence brain couldnt handle it, and i got confused. Does this happen to you? IIN?

Sounds like he's smarter than you since he knows just how to confuse and annoy you.

What comes to mind for me is a tidbit I heard long ago about Albert Einstein. Apparently when he was in school, he solved math topics with such advanced and complex equations that his own teacher couldn't understand him and failed him even though he had the correct answers.

Confusion is stupidity, understanding is knowledge.

Not necessarily, if a strange object or creature or something appeared on the Earth and we were to be confused by it, it doesn't mean we're stupid. Confusion and knowledge aren't that closely related. Not trying to argue or anything, just kind of had to get it off my chest.

      • It depends entirely. If you are confused at things that happen daily and likely to happen, it is stupidity, stupidity that can be deminished by learning about what you are confused about, where as an alien (assume that is what you meant) came to Earth, it is a very different situation, because it isn't likely to happen, nor is it something that happens daily.
Confusion and knowledge are closely related. If you are confused, it is because you lack the knowledge of what you are confused about's frequency, or general knowledge on it at all. Knowledge can also cure confusion.

"If you are confused at things that happen daily and likely to happen, it is stupidity"

I must disagree, stupidity does not equivilate to lacking knowledge, I think that the word that you are looking for is ignorance as the curing of ignorance can cure confusion and knowledge inevitably cures ignorance.

Stupid (as I would consider it to be) would be to ignore said knowledge.

I only say this because we are not born knowing everything about everything, we must learn and until we learn, we are ignorant. I don't consider ignorance and stupidity to be the same thing although stupidity can influence ignorance.

          But it's all semantics, really.

I see what you're saying ItDuz, but I agree more with Neuro who I believe put my thoughts into words better than I would have been able to if I put forth that effort originally. But regardless, you both make very good points.
