Is it normal to be confused as to why comments are thumbed up?

Every now and then I'll check back on comments I've made, or come across them as I wander through the site and see that they have however many thumbs up.

About 50% of the time, maybe more, I have no idea why anyone would thumb them up. They're really boring and pointless.

Does anyone else feel like this?

I like it when I come across a post of mine that got a thumbs up. It makes me feel valued. But the thumbs down sometimes feel mean. So I don't pay much attention anymore.

I don't understand my thumbs-uppedness sometimes either, but I don't dwell on it. I'm just glad that someone liked what I said :)

  • As far as i can see, thumbs down means it's either funny or somewhat insightful and thumbs up seems to represent anything obvious, popular or simple.

I don't pay much attention. I leave the comment, if someone likes it, that's great, if not, they may feel free to address that with their mother as they are more than welcome to cry for her, Momma I got offended on the internet!

I'm just kidding, that was rude.

    ...no I'm not.

  • The thumbs up area is a place where someone can just dissagree or agree due to their emotions. I have seen so many comments thumbs down that were actually very logical, if not the most logical comment on the page, then look at the most thumbs up area and see that the whole rainbow, hoping bunnies, rainbow, candy-lane comment got thumbsed up to the max.

I barely thumbs something down, and when I do I comment to them explaining why I thumbsed them down or why I dissagree with them, I won't just thumbs down with no reason. I do that because I like to make people aware that I'm not being emotional over something which is why I thumbsed them down or up, that I have an actual good reason to, and if you have anything to say in which proves me wrong that will show my reasons for thumbing you up or down was a good call, then I will try to thumbs the comment on the different area I done previously.

Unfortunatly, the majority of people on here aren't like that. They think simply not liking something equals to it rightfully being given a thumbs down, even if the comment is logical, yet they just don't like it, not that they can counter it, they just don't like it.

I just thumbed you up because this is a good point and I agree. The thumbs aren't to say that we like something (although I've been guilty of thumbing this way too).

I don't quite know why people like what I say, but I'm glad they do. I'm more confused as to why some of my comments are disliked. My intention is never to offend anyone, so I apologise if I have.

    • I'm almost positive people just thumbs up or down just by seeing a certain user name. I honestly wouldn't be surprised. Good or bad comment.

I want to thumb your pointless comment up for no reason other than thumbing your pointless comment up.

I do, yes. Things I thought I'd said that were worthwhile were sometimes thumbed down, and pointless throwaway comments got thumbed up. It bothered me that I was being misunderstood somehow. So, about six months ago, I stopped looking back at my comments. The only time I ever see one again is if someone replies to it.

To be honest, I don't care what my comments are voted at. I don't care if they're deleted because they're offensive. I only care if they've been deleted to manipulate the outcome of a poll. I find that very dubious and unhelpful.
