Is it normal to be caught between love and lust?

I'm a senior guy in high school. Currently searching for a special girl, but I'm having difficulty figuring out whether lust leads me to these special someones or if it's just lust! For instance, I've been friends with my current crush for a couple years now, and I've always thought she was really pretty.. It's just that sometimes I feel like my hormones are kicking in and telling me that I want to be with her based just on her looks! Anyone else having a problem figuring out what exactly love is?
