I'm a guy and I've usually been more attracted to girls who show interest in me or approach me first, I'm usually not interested in them before they approach me, but after they approach or show interest, I become really interested in them, but I'm awkward so I still don't respond to them very well (I've never been in a relationship).
It sounds like you simply like the attention the girl is giving you, not so much the girl. The girl is just coincidental in the equation for the fact that it is the attention you are craving. This appears to be the scenario for the fact that you did not show interest until she gave you the flattery first. So it is really one of those "why not" moments and a lucky break rather than actual interest.
I would try to define what type of girl you are honestly attracted to without giving weight or credence to those that approach you first. What attributes most attract you if you had your pick of any girl in the room? Set yourself a standard, then you will put forth effort in finding a quality girl you are legitimately attracted to rather than a girl of convenience or "that'll do" standards.
I agree 100% with the above poster, you need to remember to consider how it's affecting you emotionally, it could just be you feel better knowing some girls are finding you attractive with minimal effort.

Anyway, it's normal that you are attracted to girls who approach guys. I wish I had the balls to do it (without liquid courage). It's not normal that you aren't attracted to girls who don't approach guys. The majority of women are simply more comfortable being approached and you should try it.
