Is it normal to be annoyed by music you once "loved?"

Up until I was . . . Lets say 17, I used to worship metal. Now, being 21, I cant stand most of it. Its not that the music is terrible, its that I dont know why they're so angry. I understand, so-and-so broke your heart, the government is shit, existence is pointless, you don't care what whoever thinks, and fuck you, but it all just seems so immature to be screaming that message like some petulant child bereaved of his ice cream. is it normal to have such an opposing view to music you once found awesome?

Not all metal is angry and agressive. And some bands have pretty deep lyrics. I can Imagine you don't like bands you listened to in a rebellious phase anymore. But please don't give up on the entire genre. There are still a lot of mature serious problems worth screaming about.

Of course, you can listen to whatever you want.

As someone who appreciated the music at one point, you should be able to understand why it's good for some people. I don't really think it should be "opposed". If it means nothing to you now, then that's fine. Taste changing isn't anything strange, I don't think. Everyone goes through phases and it's nice to have music you can relate to, even if it only lasts as long as the phase. If you've changed and the music hasn't, then I suppose it's understandable that your opinion on it has changed too. I personally haven't fell out of love with anything I used to listen to. Even if it was pretty bad (which is quite a bit of it, because I barely have taste), it becomes a guilty pleasure type thing. Except I don't feel that guilty:P.

I agree, one shouldn't be opposed. Poor word choice for me :)

Metal is not angry. Most of it is quite deep and emotional, actually.

I used to love one band and now I can't stand them so it's normal. But not all metal is screaming and growling angry things. Metal bands have beautiful ballads and usually deeper lyrics than most of pop shit nowadays.

I used to listen to rap music up until I hit my eighth grade year. Then I realized how vulgar it was. I suddenly went form loving it to absolutaly despising it. Seven years later, and I still don't listen to rap music. Isn't it strange how time and age has that effect on you?

I used to be a full on metalhead but yes, I find the genre a bit annoying now. I will only listen to the odd song every now and again.
My boyfriend is in a metal band so sometimes I'm forced to listen to it.

It would be most unusual if you like(d) the same music you enjoy(ed) at seventeen your whole life.

Music is an amazing big world.

Some of the stuff I listened to as a teen still sounds okay, but much of it sounds like shite.

Go listen to Charlie Parker doing 'Just Friends'. Please.

I used to like metal too and I barely listen to it at all any more unless something is really, really good. For me, it filled a place in my life when I was rebelling and rebellion is best done to a loud soundtrack. So it was music for a period in my life, not necessarily music for me in my whole life.

Although I agree the music did resonate with the character I was then, I feel this is where my distaste stemmed from. In retrospect, I was a petulant adolesecnt and the music suited me. Although I am in my early twenties and have moved past my aggressive angst, I can't help but realize that the musicians who are in their thirties, forties, and fifties are still whining.

I acknowledge that I am not the musicians and I shouldn't hold them to my standard, but wouldn't yelling about something that pissed you off however many years ago get tired?

Not trying to argue, simply clarifying my thoughts : )

That's a very interesting point about older musicians writing music that appealed to us when we were younger. You've got me wondering whether they write the music they do to corner the teen market or whether it's arrested development on their part. Trying not to be judgemental but I'm veering towards the latter. I see exactly what you mean now. Hmm, this is a very interesting post. I love it when the posts are actually about something thought-provoking.
