Is it normal to be annoyed by 'anime' style

I am totally serious when I write this. Ever since I was a kid in the 80s I noticed this one particular cartoonist who was always drawing and publishing comics, and I thought "Wow, what a successful cartoonist! He has so many TV shows and he publishes his strips EVERYWHERE!" Then it slowly dawned on me that it wasn't just one guy...the deal was, in Japan, there appears to be some kind of federal law that says you can only draw cartoons using one style. I'm serious, and it really has always bothered me immensely. All Japanese cartoon characters absolutely MUST have big exaggerated eyes (with highlights), a tiny chin, and practically no nose. THOUSANDS of cartoonists in Japan ALL strive to emulate this EXACT style. The thing is, I JUST DON'T GET IT... WHY isn't there any diversity? It makes NO SENSE at all. You know...in America we have Dilbert, Boondocks, Garfield, Hagar the Horrible, Blondie, Family Circus, Peanuts, South Park, Life in Hell...each one completely different from the rest, each drawn in a different style. But not in Japan! If a cartoonist in Japan doesn't draw his characters with big poofy eyes, highlights and a tiny chin, then that person is killed! I'm really quite serious here. Why is an entire culture UNABLE to draw a cartoon figure in more than ONE fixed style? Is it weird for me to find this 'anime' style extremely confusing, if not outright annoying? All my life this has bothered me...

I was a huge anime fan but deviantart and all the kiddy hype really killed it for me.

It's just part of Japanese culture, it's not like they're doing it TO be annoying. Not to mention most of the Japanese fans are realistic about life. It's the American kids who go batshit insane who ruin it for people.

Also, I hate American cartoons (mostly), because ...they're just...classless, somehow. They look stupid and most of them don't have an intense plot...which anime/manga doesn't anymore considering it's all re-washed bullshit, but most of it does have a deeper plot at least.

There are lots of different manga styles though. If you read "Solanin", it's a lot different and there is no magic, machines, blabla, it's about a girl, her boyfriend, a rock band, and death.
And it's not a hyped-girly sex manga like you always see either, it's 'slice of life' genre and it's ...it was good.

But yeah, anime doesn't compare to real art no matter how realistic it may be painted up to be, etc. It takes much more talent to replicate what is in front of you, and is more natural to do so. You don't see people with thin-line noses and spikey purple hair walking around all the time.

I understand, but you have to realize there are MANY different art styles in Japan. If you Don't like anime you won't bother to look. Many Japanese cartoons you see on American kids channels look the same, but not the adults. Try to give it a chance, it isn't just about the looks, Its about the story too.

Perfectly normal. I was annoyed at it too. Then again, it's just another medium, like what somebody else said. Plus, if you go to Japan a lot of the cartoons aren't like anime at all. Furthermore, anime is changing. Most modern animations like Death Note and Naruto aren't as exaggerated as, say, sailor moon.

  • I just think this whole subject is stupid. I'm Japanese and I don't like anime that much. It's ok. I think the people are kinda cute. Seriously though, they don't get KILLED though. You make it sound as if the Japanese government listens to everyones conversations and things like that. Not true. I think you're just angry about a dumb subject. Get over it. If you don't like anime, ignore whatever shit for anime you "watch."

No, no, no. All anime artists have different styles, just as all traditional cartoonists do. :)

I do not like anime, either.
Their eyes have to many shades and parts,
    and well,
    I just don't like it..
    Chibi is cute though.

I always thought that it started with one manga-styled piece. Then, a few people from Japan liked it, and did it too. Then they all had Manga-babies, and now, much like a disease, It's spreading like butter into the rest of the world.

Just like any other trend, really.

I personally love the style, but I love it even more when someone takes it and personalizes it so well and so diversely, that it's kickass and amazing.

it kinda did. granted, there are several different styles of anime, but the most popular Style (the one the op is complaining about, is whats known as the Tezuka style, started in the 1950s by osamu tezuka, creater of Astroboy. originally, it made fun of how Disney drew their characters. (Look at bambi and you will see what I mean)

I do find it annoying. All the characters always look the same, like there's only one style and you can only change it a little, but you can never completely change it...it always sort of looks the same somehow, and I do find that annoying.

They're not all the same. There are a lot of anime that are drawn differently. I find the eyes really exaggerated too. But I don't really find anime annoying.

MANGA, not Anime, which is animated manga, is an ancient Japanese art form. I just thought I'd start with that. You probably are taking this too far, but alot of people are annoyed by this cartoon style. Manga is drawn in many different styles, with many different substyles. The way that you describe manga sounds like you're describing the extreme (chibi, SD, etc.), and while this particular style is popular, it does not take any less effort than any of the other styles of cartooning.

You are entitled to be irritated and annoyed by this, and most people are, but maybe you should research your rants a bit before you post them online.

    • I find it amusing that you think 'anime' is a subject like organic chemistry that needs to be researched...as if a case is then presented to the 'Royal Academy' of anime. I presume you are a member of this elite organization? I've 'researched' this shit all my life...it couldn't be more simple. The goddamn anime cartoons all basically look like they evolved from ONE STYLE, and ever since that style emerged NOBODY HAS EVER INVENTED ANOTHER ONE. EVER. Does Doonesbury look like it evolved from the same style that The Simpsons did? NOOOOO.....a completely new style was created where nothing was before. But with ANIME...the overall morphisms and style are always preserved and only altered in a few trifling ways. But the artist doesn't DARE invent a completely unique style of his/her own! THAT is what annoys me. Conformity for the sake of conformity. I don't stay up late at night obsessing over it, but it's fun to whine about for a few minutes.

      @CapitanCheerio
Sorry bub. Anime is not "animated manga". Although Japanese animated series are often adapted from Japanese comics, but they're not all from there. Some of my favorite anime are Ergo Proxy, Cowboy Bebop, and Texhnolyze, and none of those were adapted from manga. There is no such thing as "manga style". Take a look at a page from my favorite manga.
      http://www.narbonic.com/vagabond.jpg
It deviates completely from any of the subtypes of manga illustration most people have.
However, most anime and manga look almost identical, and, as an anime fan, this pisses me off.
      Good day sir.

I agree I can't stand anime. I can draw it but I hate it because it's easy and it takes no talent to be able to draw it. If you draw anime then you aren't an artist to me.

I'm not as passionate about it as you are but I also can't stand anime. Also, and this is going to sound mean but atleast I'm being honest, if someone tells me that they like anime it makes me like/respect them less. To me it is so weird and creepy I can't understand why someone would like it. I just assume that they're into weird hentai stuff and that they're a weird little anime freak.

This is the japanese culture..u cannot change it, and nobody forces u to watch them.. i kinda agree with the nose, but it's not that big deal. at least anime don't lack at story/plot, and deep meaning. Most of the american cartoons don't even have a story, and they r kinda well..rude and stupid. But if u actually cared, u would see how different anime/manga styles there are... the most shallow example i can give u is Yu-Gi-Oh! vs Death Note

Dumbass. anime is really pretty animation ever, YOU STUPID anime do have nose but its small that makes it cuter and have a big eyes full of shiness better than f uckin ugly america cartoon who have big nose like a pig and f u ckin small ugly eyes. example, like arnold, homer simpson and etc ,american cartoon doesn't look like people at all cuz it has fu ckin small body ,big head it looks handicap and some of cartoon have only 3 fingger or don't have fingger at all, different than anime:even their face doesnt look like people, their body look like 100% human have a perfect body , completed 5 fingger in each thier hands. WHAT A PERFECTNESS!

Deviantart is steadily making me dislike anime more and more. It's just SO overdone, especially in North America, and I feel like no one can be creative on that site anymore. It's a medium, like everything else, but I've always preferred Disney style art.

I can't stand it either, normal. The eyes creep me out, the animation is shoddy at best, and I hate when people call it cute/kawaii, because in my opinion, it's not. I hate it when people call me racist due to my opinions.

The reason why you see this is because you probably don't notice the similarities between all American cartoons. If you were Japanese you'd probably wonder why all American cartoons look a certain way, and be unaware of what people elsewhere notice.

I agree that anime is mostly annoying, but there are some good ones out there like Death Note and Princess Mononoke that are pretty good. I guess each artist has a bit of a different style. The "chibi" style really does get to me though, I don't really know why. I think it's supposed to be cute but ends up being really ugly. But American cartoons tend to be even worse. The ones you mention, like Dilbert, Garfield, and South Park are just annoying and have even worse animation(to me). People have a right to draw whatever style they want and it really depends on your taste. If you don't like anime it's fine.

No, not all anime share that art style. The anime that is imported share similar art styles mostly because american companies have learned that that is what's selling the most in america and what is most easily recognizable as anime. Anime that deviate from this typically won't get imported. what you see in the west doesn't represent anime as a whole, what you are seeing is just a part of it.

Yes, there is more diversity in animation styles in the west, but this is due to america's history. America has people of many different races and religions living together so of course there will be a lot of diversity in art styles since many cultural backgrounds co-exist in the country.

Japan how ever, doesn't have many foreigners even to this day. As a result, Japans culture has remained mostly unchanged and there is less diversity than america since the majority of Japanese citizens share the same cultural background with little to no outside influence.
So the diversity is there, but it is harder to find.

    Sorry about the sloppy writing.

  • Ravenr20

That's because during the feudal time of Japan, no other nations entered it, and that was how the style of art was created. No outside source changed this, and the Japanese want to keep it like that. The style is different, but if you don't like it, then don't read or watch it.

Mmmm, even though I do like anime (some styles of it though, not all), I can totally understand why you would be irritated by it. I hated it at first...but eventually I found some styles I like (the darker series have better, more intricately-drawn characters and scenery). Anyway, it's perfectly normal to be annoyed by the big eyes and weird body proportions.

When I was a kiddo, It didnt matter. but as i matured as an artist, i realized that anime is fuckin lame style. I dont love styles when the characters get all the same face/ same features.... john k once said " we wouldnt watch movies if all the actors had the same faace no?" I feel the same way with art styles.
80s anime were slightly more specefical about their character's faace though.

At least, if there're something I will always love about anime, its the cuteness, the character design and the color palette

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA giant robots!

The thing you need to realize about anime is that it is very influenced by the culture as a whole, and Japanese culture is extremely conformist and collectivist. One famous Japanese proverb is, "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down." Anime is just the product of a collectivist society that shuns anything differentiating from the norm. (Notice how all anime shows have the same generic plotlines, too...)

    • Indeed, it isn't hard to imagine that Japanese culture is as you say it is! Anime, contrary to what many have said above, is unashamedly conformist. Anybody who dares speculate that there is diversity in anime is in DENIAL. That's their problem, not mine. I like your term 'collectivist society,' and I think it hits the nail on the head (no pun intended). Very generic, and very pathetic. How am I supposed to appreciate some of the subtleties and grace mentioned above, when a bland kind of conformity for conformity's sake takes center stage for no reason whatsoever?

Sounds like the OP is a major ethnocentrist, which is normal. Japanese culture can be conformist as a whole because that is what has worked for them. Just because something isn't "unique" or "individualistic" shouldn't detract from its power or validity - that is just a western perspective of merit.

  • Really?... I've seen many different drawings of art. They're not all the same and even if you think they are, it's because the manga/anime is shoujo. Which is kind of like a girly gender while horror genders are kind of rough but not all of them are. My opinion is on which category they fit into.

They do the shading to make it more realistic whether you like it or not... and sometimes for more intensity.

Anime to me is just another medium. Great stories can be told, great characters given life. I love Hayao Miyazaki, the film Akira, the anime in Kill Bill Vol. 1. It's just another medium. One thing anime has going for it in a big way is it's ability to add a dancelike grace and poetry to violent or fantastic imagery, without being cartoonish. Some people seem to have fetish for it, though. The only thing that annoys me about it is the axaggerated gestures, all the wierd sighing and exclamations.
