Is it normal to be an isolationist?

My mother is against anything that deals with communication. She doesn't talk.to.anubody, has no friends and distrusts the people she knowes. We live in a very antisocial neighborhood. We used to live at a lively complex. She got angry with all the people for no reason and vowed to move.

She doesn't like her own family and hates with a firely passion my father's family. She hates my father and calls him names behind his back. Its getting worse by the day. She is beginning to distrust me.

Excuse any grammatical errors..

Sounds like your mom might be developing some kind of mental illness, because it sounds like she's really paranoid. Watch over her in case her condition worsens. If it does, you need to get her help.

    • She refuses to go get help whenever I try to convince her she yells at the top of her lungs. I think she has paranoid schizophrenia.

She should go into the wild.

She could go live in a book drive bus in the woods and then fall in love and shack up with a raccoon like that weird English guy on that one episode of "My Name is Earl."

No, I don't think that is very normal. I think you should play things safe for a while until you can move out on your own or something.

By the way, I like the word "isolationist" in your title. Is it an actual word or did you make it up? Just curious.

I didn't write the post but I saw that word plenty of times in my U.S History textbook as a way to describe America.

Yep. Although I first heard when we talked about the Madison Decree or whatever he called it during his presidency.

I like it as opposed to loner. There are plenty of other weird words in the textbook I saw; like "brainchild" or "braintrust." As in, The New Deal was a result of Roosevelt and his braintrust; ultimately it was their brainchild. I'm not even making this up. It's not verbatim to the textbook but that would be the context of how it was used.

I'm pretty sure I saw her buying crack again this morning from the corner.

So atleast she talks to her dealer.

Maybe encourage her to bring some of the other crack heads around for a party ?

    Just an idea

  • Well, I think some isolation can be good for some people, but too much can be detrimental. The way your mother is behaving, I think she's isolated herself enough. Try and help her out or get some help for her.

It's human nature to make connection with our own kind. I'm going to rule it not normal.

It is not normal to live in isolation, but unfortunately it has become more common in this 'perfect' corporate society.
    Humans are social creatures.
