Is it normal to be an alternative / underground manga fan?

I'm really into alternative/underground manga and I notice there are many anime/manga fans who are completely clueless about all the awesome non mainstream works there are. It hurts me to know that there are so many genious in the manga field and only the more commercial get to be known outside Japan like Akira Toriyama or Masashi Kishimoto. I want to know how odd it is for a person to like more unknown manga titles. In fact, have you ever heard of authors like Taiyo Matsumoto, Junko Mizuno, Hideshi Hino, Suehiro Maruo, Yuichi Yokohama, Keiichi Koike, Usamaru Furuya, Shintaro Kago, etc.?

It is the way of things that the very best are rarely well known.

I know exactly what you mean. I remember that I went to my schools anime club for a while and all they ever talked about was mainstream anime like Naruto or Bleach. It was very annoying because they were obsessed with these shows and looked down on people who weren't. I'm not a big manga reader but I watch a lot of anime. One anime currently that has my attention is titled "The World God Only Knows," if your interested check it out on crunchyroll. Oh and I'm a big fan of deadman wonderland if you're aware of it.

I heard Deadman Wonderland is actually quite an awsome anime along with the manga which is ongoing? I plan on watching it eventually and reading the manga if its really as good as it seems.

I've read lots of manga, anything you can read on the internet. What pisses me off is when you read a great manga, and knowing that only the "best" ones get turned into anime, you think. Why didn't this one? There's some shit anime out there to, and you have to wonder who actually selects this crap, and who by passed something awesome.

Well theirs lots of animes and mangas that I thought were awsome but are rarely heard of here. Seems that what mostly appeals to Westerners are just a bunch of explosions and the main character talking about how their gonna anal the villian after they power up for another 5 episodes...lol its funny cause DBZ is actually my favorite overall anime/manga of all time.
