Is it normal to be american, and hate america?

I'm an american, born and raised. I consider myself fairly educated, I study economics, politics, and usually keep up on worldly affairs. I've come to believe that this "land of the free" is one of the most oppressive nations in the developed world. I'm sick of corporate lobbyists making the decisions that we the people should be making, it makes me feel totally helpless when our leaders make decisions that constantly contradict the decisions made by the voters, simply because they are bribed into it. I can't help but feel a burning resentment for this country. I know other nations hate us, and I understand why, I just want to know if there are any other American citizens out there that think it is normal to hate your own country?

Being skeptical of the country is a whole lot better than people who are blindly patriotic. That being said the US isn't all that bad, no country is perfect.

It has also been said that the people who are skeptical of their governments are true patriots!

Being skeptical is one thing, which I have nothing against. I just hate the people who act like America is wrong no matter what.

...or the ones who insist America is the "only" or "best" or exclusively anything else. I hear ya...you make a good point.

It's not unusual to question one's own culture and society, and to appreciate what does work well, but be frustrated with what does not work well. As someone rightly pointed out, each society does some things well, but no society is perfect. Those who see positive examples in other countries sometimes are frustrated by the unwillingness shown by members of one's own society to even acknowledge a problem, let alone seek a solution they themselves didn't develop or think up.

Just because you are frustrated with your society doesn't mean you "hate" it...it just means you're aware and you see areas for improvement.

Because I've lived in more than one country and have had the opportunity to travel, I've had the privilege to see "how other folks do it," so to speak, in terms of making society good and successful. I was frustrated and angry, too, but realized that it's normal to question. Be glad your government even allows you to question and have a critical discussion like this - there are still places where even questioning "how things are done" means instant imprisonment on trumped up charges.

Maybe you could be a leader in the community to help bring about the changes you'd like to see. :)

Agreed! It's those people who really care about where the country is going.

our gverment is rather corrupt and should have more partys than just the 2 there is now if you look at other demecratic nations you will see very few if any consist of a 2 party system

Yeah I get that. As I said, the country isn't perfect, but it isn't all that bad either. The US may have problems, but if one lived in any truly poor country or a country with even worse corrupt government, I'm sure they would be happy to return to the US.

My point is, blindness to a countries problems is idiotic, but so is treating any developed country like it is a terrible place when there is way worse out there.

    Well now the USA ..

"weapons of mass destruction 'R US"

A clever country that realised early that other countries consider it a privilege to have their children pulverised by US made weapons.

A Christian country which may soon help yet another culture (Iran) experience the privilege of circa 30,000 children being dispatched wholemeal, or more likely piecemeal, to the daisy fields and another million to shriek in the night.

Whats not to like about the US ?

Wow, that's some war-mongering there. What threats has the US made against Iran? I see Iran threatening the US with violence, but not the other way around.

Not only do I hate American foreign policy...I find it extremely hard to be non-racist when I see all the white countries joining it in supporting the genocide in the Middle East, Africa and horribly hypocritical economic policy when it comes to other nations.

Well....I think I can't actually answer this question, mostly because I'm not american, but I'll try it.

I may not know how big these oppressive problems are, but I can tell you that problems around here are pretty ugly. My country is having a "battle royale" with politics and drug cartels. Every single day we see dead people caused by them in the newspaper, and these are the "official" deaths, who may know what is the real number; They even have a satirical joke calling it "the executed-o-meter". Most of the journalists are scared, dead, censored or corrupt. Choose our president is exatly like choose our executioner. I don't now how bad are your problems, but I hope they aren't worse that ours.

Can't please 100% of the people, 100% of the time...

Which is what American tries to do, hence why so many people hate it.

Yup...not the fact that it's killing hundreds of thousands of people in the Middle East or destabilizing African governments to get at their resources

But, on a serious note, America is not the only empire that has abused it's power, by far not the only empire. If the British or Roman Empires were still around, they'd be doing the same thing. Conquest and Greed is not exclusive to America, hell, if Kenya had as big of an empire as the US they'd be doing the same damn thing. Give a country enough power and it happens.

That's not true. Some countries have done it historically and some countries haven't. China didn't, and many kingdoms in India didn't. It has to do with culture and the heroes that are revered in that culture's mythology.

Well...hope America doesn't take too much comfort in that thought. Most bullies don't stop until they are beaten up. Hate to see a million Iranians die while the US learns the ropes of being a civil country

  • Yea I used to voice my opinions about America loud and proud but then my parents were worried i'd somehow get them deported so I've brought it down a couple of notches. The US is a good country... but not as great as most Americans think

I'm on the same boat as you, I don't want to voice my opinion cuz I don't want to get my ass in trouble.. Even though, there's a huge fire in me that wants to give an opinion, ill shut up.

I'm a guest in this country, and I respect that!

  • I was born in the US.... but I no longer live there. In fact, I don't even live on land. So.... I just call myself a "citizen of the world". It fits my lifestyle, it works, and I don't get a quarter as much grief from locals who happen to dislike the US.

Yes it is not fair. Why I think all like thinking people should move to separate areas of the globe. That way no one has any issues. All the people living in one area will think the same. No more fighting. Instead of one half dragging the rest down. I was glad when I read this. You do not seem like a wannabe trying to hate america because its the cool thing to do. Your post made a lot of sense.

Lol...good point...30 now, but that screen-name is 17 years old. Still...you are so naiive it's funny. Total aid from the US is equal to 1% of the US GDP...and if it includes personal donations...it's 2%. Now compare that will the amount of killing it does around the world and the amount of destabilization it does. Btw...it contributes 25% of the UN budget but 60% of UN officials are American.

I think that there are a lot of good Americans, but I would be supportive of a coalition to militarily squash the US. It can't happen right now because India/China don't have enough economic power and I'm guessing when they do in a couple of decades the US will back down and start whimpering. Horrible horrible things are being done by the US around the world...it's funny how most Americans are completely naiive and ignorant.
