Is it normal to be almost 23 and not have your liscense?

It's not that I'm too lazy to get it because I've taken lessons and learned how to drive, but I absolutely hate driving. I'm nervous the whole time and my body tenses up and I start to sweat. I've made it by fine without a liscense and can get rides or walk to where I need to be, but it's hard to explain to people and kind of embarrassing.

I'm a little bit older than you with no licence. I hate people looking down on me because of it.

I'm 28, never even had my learner's permit. I need to do it, but luckily I have a million and one reasons not to...though it's mainly a mix of laziness and fear. Luckily, Melbourne is pretty good for public transport so I get away with it.

This is so stupid! What? Is everybody born in a car? I swear, some people would take their car to go to the bathtroom.

Yeah it's normal, my friend is almost 24 and doesn't have her license. I got mine at 17, which isn't that late I guess. Not everybody gets their license at 16 (or whatever the legal driving age is where you're from, it's different in some countries).

I'm twenty and I just had to get my permit for the second time around. I got my permit first when I was seventeen and because no one seems to want to assist me in working towards my license, I got virtually no practice. Plus, driving does make me quite anxious. I don't see myself having my license by my twenty-first birthday in December..not to sound negative, just being realistic..but it could happen..if someone would step up and actually help me..

  • Thanks for the feedback guys, I guess it's a lot more common then I thought. Getting looked down upon because of it though is probably the most annoying part. You figure as long as you could find ways to get places other people shouldn't judge you for it. I'm also backed up with a pretty hefty student loan so even if I did drive I couldn't afford to.

I'm 19 and I don't have my permit or license yet. It's a great amount of stress for me so I have avoided it so far. :c

I'm 21 and dont have one yet. I'm not looking forward to having to get one either. . . I feel like I may kill someone behind the wheel. Also, I'm not looking forward to paying for insurance, registration, maintenance, and gas. . . . ugh.

I'm 21 and just got my license a few months ago. For years I was insecure that my friends got theirs at 17 and I missed my chance. Now that I have it I feel better.

I don't mean to be judgmental, but 23 is a bit late. I mean it's not as outrageous as 25 or 30, but getting it should be one of your top priorities this year.

I mean I don't think it's normal, but it's not uncommon either. I mean it's not bizarre or wierd. We all develop differently and have our own difficulties - Im not gonna judge.

Its normal. I'm a little bit younger than you and I still haven't gotten my license. Back when I turned 16, everyone had such high hopes for me but I realized I couldn't do it. I've got phobias and health issues that would make driving for me a hazard. I'd be too panicked about everything that involved having a license that it wouldn't be worth getting it. There is a subway but I'd have to drive or take a bus to get to it. The bus stop is quite a few miles away so, I'd have to do a bit of walking. I could go on walks but I can't because I have agoraphobia paranoia:/ Currently, its a lost cause.

I've gotten mixed reactions from the people I know about this. One acquaintance seems to be pretty okay with it. Though periodically she'll ask me if I have plans to get my license. I'll say, "No." and the topic ends somewhat awkwardly.

I had a friend who found out about it and acted like it was the end of the world. She asked me what I was going to do without a car. I had to inform her about the existence of walking, riding a bike, buses and the subway.... We are no longer friends and I have to wonder if the reason she suddenly stopped talking to me was because of that.

Lastly, one of relatives really got on my nerves about it. She kept nagging me and making up situations where I would have to drive as a means to guilt-trip me. One day, I lost my cool and yelled at the woman. There's only been one time, that I can remember, where she brought the subject up again.

It does embarrass me to have to bring it up sometimes. Especially, since you never know how someone is going to react. I think its silly for people to flip out about this. This is more common then people think.

Everyone has things to deal with AG. I try not to be too hyper talkative in a group setting. If you get around without a car you're saving money. It isn't the be all end all, driving that is.

        Thanks.

Sometimes, I wish my mode of transportation could be a four-legged animal. But alas, I shall have to settle for a bicycle.

I got my license when I was 16 and my first car at 17 so I say it's not normal but I live in Los Angeles. I can see if you lived in New York where you wouldn't really need one because their public transportation is really good.

  • I do not have one either,
I wanted to take it when I turned 17 but was talked out of it because i did not have the money for the lessons,
I am 22 and 7 months old so its normal not to have one.
but I guess in America or whatever country you are in its normal for them to have one, but you can take it at anytime,

  • I live in a city where you have to drive everywhere. Walking and public transport simply aren't options. So I can't relate, I got my license at 16. But driving is kind of shitty if you're *forced* to do it every time you want to get somewhere. But you should at least become comfortable with it. Lots of people don't drive. No big deal
