Is it normal to be afraid of what's under you in water?

I'm scared of swimming. I live by fresh water, not even a ocean. But let's say I'm at the Y, I have to have goggles on, and when I swim and make air bubbles, then look behind me, I scream. I guess I'm afraid of the unknown, or the endless blue just taking me away. I've had a dream about it when I was a kid. Now I'm scared. Is it normal?

I hate it since I got nipped by a crab lol! It's sort of funny but all sea freaks me out, I've just got back from Cuba where I could go far out in the sea and still see what was going on beneath me but after 5 mins I panicked and ran back out! My boyfriend thinks it's strange but he's never been got by a crab lol!

Yeah, this freaks me out too. I'm not scared of dying or anything, just that there is some kind of octopus-monster watching me ready to grab my ankle or some crap like that.
Don't have any problems with it near the shores or in pools, just when I swim far enough that no one is around and I can barely see the beach anymore.

Oh god underwater debris freaks me out...like logs and rocks. And fish. Yikes...I'm terrified of things under me in the water. I think it's just because we know the water is not our domain, and we're weak when we're swimming.

  • I feel a anxious when I'm swimming in and ocean or lake. Sometimes even to make me want to get out of the water. I don't think it's that abnormal considering water is an alien environment for humans, and it's just instinct to be cautious of having creatures swimming around and under you, and not being able to see them (or atleast, not very well).

I don't swim in uncontrolled water. I've had wayyyy too much bad experience with snakes, eels, crabs, and strong currents. I'm the one who goes on vacation to the beach but only tans or swims in the pools/jacuzzi.

When I was a kid and in the pool at the Y, I used to always be afraid that a shark would come out from the deep end and get me. Now I'm afraid to go out very far in the ocean. I don't like not being able to see through the water to see what's around/under my feet.
