Is it normal to be afraid of swimming in the dark?

Whenever I am swimmig in the dark I get this irrational fear that something will happen to me in the pool or that there is something lurking in the water. And I can't even go near the water if it is at the beach and it's dark. However I am a varsity swimmer and I surf so I love the water. is it normal to be afraid of it in the dark?

yes its normal. its just the water version of being afraid of the dark. i feel the same way i hate dark water or deep water because i dont know whats on the bottom. i also hate it when theres a bed of seaweed on the bottom (lake, pond etc) because there might be something lurking in the seaweed. so its not really irrational all the time but i know what you mean

i also have a pool, but won't go in it at night. even in daylight, dark water gives me the creeps.

  • Same here! Even if im in a darkish pool i feel likes theres a shark or something. haha i know its rediculous but im just paranoid:) but with a bunch of people at night its not as scary for me :)

  • I hear ya man and I'm the same way. I used to panic swimming in hotel pools at night even though I've been swimming since I was four.

May be a natural instinct. I wouldn't swim in the dark at all. I think I'd panic.

  • Same here. I love to swim, but in the dark I always feels that Jaws will come and eat me. It's normal.
