Is it normal to be afraid of people?

I'm afraid of people, if you couldn't already guess. I mean i can shake hands with people hug my friends but the second anyone tries to know more then my name and age i start to feel overly anxious and have been reduced to tears on more then one occasion. Im afraid ill be alone forever becuase i can't let anyone see or know who i am. This has driven me to cutting myself and constant thoughts of suicide becuase i hate who i am. do any of you know any way that i could work on this or get help?

    Broken if you let go on it will become more and more diffcult to leave your house. I'm working on the same thing my husbend works nights so he should be home sleeping but whenever I have to leave he has to come with me I have tried to places by myself and break down you don't want it to control your life trust me and good luck to you

    (sorry for the length) listen, a good therapy that might help you get through your fears is this..when you meet someone, imagine the worst thing that can happen if you let them know your age and name... picture it in your head... what can they possibly do to harm you knowing that info that they couldn't do to you right that instant..?- you have to exclude kidnapping, killing, rape etc since they don't need your name or your age to do those things- be thorough and creative in your thought process but also fair..you have to think of things that could not be done without your name and age. Now those extremes are highly unlikely rite? AND aren't even life threatening since to kill you, a person you meet doesn't need your age rite? think to your self the "worst and most unlikely thing isnt so bad" and slowly but surely open ursel up little by little and im sure those close to you and all who meet you will benefit by what you have to offer!!

      hey cherryblossom! Be nice! But yes I agree this is a problem. a serious one. But don't lose hope, go to counselors and help centers, try to hang around people more and if you get reduced to tears again, just let them flow. Its a mind over matter situation you are dealing with, not a fear. Recognize the things that run thru your head before you get so anxious, and talk against them. Be confident and be willing to do whatever it takes to over come this. Because you can!

        Thank you for that. Typing all of this out was kind of like therapy in the fist place because im telling who knows how many people about this, i promise to take your advice and put it to good use. thank you so much :)
