I actually feel more relaxed when surrounded by a lot of people because I feel that the attention isn't focused on me. But around only a few people is when I get anxiety.

I had that problem for a long time. And still do to some extent. to combat it I saw a shrink and anti-depressants for anxiety...but what really helped the most was forcing myself to do it on a daily basis. i started first with just one particular store everyday. eventually when that gets easier then try another...and so on. But its definitly helpful to talk to someone to try to figure out the underlying problem.

I used to have a very bad case of social anxiety. It didn't affect me in crowded places where everybody is a stranger. It only affected me in small groups, especially if I had some kind of connection to others in the group, because then I felt compelled to interact and socialize with them, which is something I couldn't do. The reason I couldn't do it was because I was a loner and never learned how to socialize. I forced myself to be in social settings because I wanted to overcome my angst, and that worked. The more I mingled and socialized with others the easier it got, to the point that after many years I now feel quite comfortable in social settings. I can even comfortably initiate conversations with total strangers now. It's just like anything else in life; driving, painting, archery, etc, the more you do it the better you get!

Omg! I'm the same way. I get bad anxiety when there is too many people around when I am in the stores and get very nervous. I try to avoid going into the stores as much as I can. People think I'm weird.

Keep working at it a little at a time. Everyday go further into the store and for a longer period of time. If it continues seek professional help. Its pretty common, people just don't like to talk much about it for fear of appearing crazy or whatever. Affects people in various public places or situations. Hope you overcome it.

It's just maybe anxiety of people, because stores generally have people in there. Or you have a fear of products.
