Is it normal to be able to smell dead ants???

Dead or dying ants totally stink. Not green ants though, they're just a**holes. Tasty citrus flavoured a**holes. I have told numerous people but they don't believe me.
Is it normal to be able to smell dead ants or am I just awesome?

Yes it's normal and I smell them to. When they are killed or dying they release a chemical that stinks to warn other ants of danger. Because ants follow each other on scent this works well.

I tast and smell ants. I was under the believe that it is a genetic ability to tast ants and some people don't have the gene. Is this true?

Live ants sometimes stink. Smashed ants really stink. When my husband put a log full of ants into a fire one time, I had to leave the area it smelled so bad. They smell like some variation of turpentine.

I have never smelled ants before, at least that I can remember. Where do you live? I ask because I have NEVER seen a green ant here, only black, brown and the rare Fire Ant colony.

they're not saying its normal. for someone to go around sniffing ants, the above posters are just saying that they have a smell when die.

and they do, i crushed a few that were crawling on me and the smell hit me afterwards. as already mentioned, they release formic acid as a distress call to the rest of the colony, and it has a potent smell.

now, if he's killing ants alot to smell them, then i can't really say that's normal.

Yes, that is normal. Our behavioral psychology class had a conversation about this. Apparently some people are able to smell ants. It seems that someone suggested a urine smell. If they can smell them alive, then assuredly smelling them dead would also be normal.

I've noticed it too. It seems disgustingly sweet smelling...like a sugar cube

Yeah- dead ants, specifically crushed ants, have a distinctive odor. It's subtle, but I don't like it too much. Iknowhoiam got it right.

Hmm. Well. I have eaten ants, and yes they do taste sour, but have a habit of biting your tounge. Dead ants, though, I've not smelled. Burning ants I have smelled, but not just plain dead ones.
