Is it normal to be a grammar nazi?

I hate when people don't spell words right or use incorrect grammar when writing. I know I probably piss people off sometimes but I can't help but to correct the problems. Maybe it's because my grandma was a grammar teacher and she pretty much raised me? I'm guessing that's why, but is it normal?

  • Its how you approach it. If you are being helpful people will appreciate it. If it looks like you are just finding fault, it will be resented, and so will you.

The only grammar Nazis I mind are the hypocrites whose own sentences contain errors. I see a few of those here on this page...

I too correct people, it is a habit. I am incredibly good at English and that's the reason I have to correct people; I especially dont like slang word's such as wiff,u,haf,etc... very annoying.

In other words: You're right. Their spelling is awful these days. It's too bad because they should have learned this in grade school. Really though, it bugs me, too.

Grammar rules are hard and I make many mistakes myself, so I try not to be picky. But if anyone ends a sentence with an extraneous 'at', I want to rip off their head. Is that bad?

Of course it is. Sure it might be annoying, but it's important to respect the proper writting.
(excuse possible mistakes, I'm not a native)

I correct people all the time. I live in a small town, where all my friends can not speak English correctly. It irritates me so much.

Same, it's just a bit annoying how people can't spell or use their grammar correctly. I'd understand if they were foreign but if they're native (born in the area with whichever language) I really don't know how they aren't fluent in it. Both grammar and spelling wise.

  • Occasionally, I find it irritating. Most of the time, I don't say/write anything though because it's rude and a little self-righteous to do so.

Really, what does it say about you, if you are pointing out the mistakes of people who are so obviously not as well-educated as you are? I've done it once or twice myself and my motives were to make the other person feel as stupid as I thought their mistake was. I wish I hadn't because I too make mistakes sometimes.

The site removed the spaces from the first line of my comment. Anyway, you missed a comma.

I don't think you double spaced after those periods...

  • I'm the same. I have a compulsion to correct peoples grammar mistakes. But I make some mistakes too sometimes, so I'm not completely over the top about it.

That is very normal, I do it all the time actually, drives me mental when people can not spell words over 3 letters long. we have leet speak and text talk to thank for that too.

I absolutely despise people's creativity when it comes to substituting homophones for words which mean nothing even close to the word they are trying to express. Just recently, someone used "Thoughs" instead of those. I literally (ha-ha) railed them out.

  • Yeah same but I'm not too bad on it. People can do spelling mistakes and all and I won't care but when they start typing like this: how r u doin? That gets on my nerves.

Ugh yes. It is so annoying when people cannot write the most simple of sentences. It drives me nuts

I am the exact same way. It may also just be you; no one in my family is good with grammar, but I've always been an excellent English student and ultimate grammar nazi, haha.
